Would You Wear a Nonwhite Wedding Dress?

I ask because Henry Holland of House of Holland designed this hot pink lace wedding dress ($1,200) for the bride who seeks a bold color on her big day. A lavender version, albeit sans slip, was worn by Dree Hemingway on House of Holland's Spring '10 catwalk. It's no doubt a pretty dress — one-shoulder, sheer, lace, pink — but definitely doesn't scream wedding. Would you wear it, or any other nonwhite dress, on your big day?

my mom wore this fabulous emerald cap sleeve fitted sheath when she got married in '75, it looked amazing! i wore white bc i i didnt have the guts!

TSpeaks is totally right. For those who say white is traditional aren't looking far enough back. Blue was a traditional color up until the Victorian era. I almost went with a sky blue chiffon from Jenny Yoo, so go for it booe1104! Blue has been connected to weddings for centuries. In ancient Rome, brides wore blue to symbolize love, modesty, and fidelity. Christianity has long dressed the Virgin Mary in blue, so purity was associated with the color. Before the late 19th century, blue was a popular color for wedding gowns, as evidenced in proverbs like, "Marry in blue, lover be true." From marthastewart.com

Since white wedding dresses have only been "traditional" since the late 1800's (Queen Victoria just wore hers to prove that she was wealthy enough to afford white, which was difficult to get and even more impractical to wear), and isn't all that popular outside of certain western countries, I really see no problem with color!

I've always said I wanted light blue near my face. It just makes my eyes look amazing. My aunt wore black for her wedding. My grandmother wasn't very happy. The black dress was perfect, she felt and looked fabulous in it! I'd rather feel great in my dress then prescribe to tradition.

I'm going to wear a sparkily gold dress for my wedding, but if my mother fusses TOO much, I'll wear a gold gown with a white sash or trim.

I wouldn't wear a bright color, but I would consider wearing ivory if white didn't look great with my skin tone. I seriously doubt I will end up with anything other than white, but I would consider it.

Agree with Rock Princess and there are plenty of different style wedding dresses in that color genre. I'd go short before hot pink, or I'd at the very least pick a PRETTY non-white dress.

when I got married, I thought about this honestly. had a white one though :) maybe, who knows, if I ran into a must-have-nonwhite wedding dress, I wouldn`t have said no :)

sans the sleeve, it would probably cool for an outdoor wedding. it looks a little too party central for a church.

Weffie - I agree that most bridal gowns out there look way too costume-like! Personally, I would probably stick with white, just because I think it looks good with my skin tone, and I can't think of any other one color that I would rather wear. BUT, I would totally support someone wearing this look - the hair, the dress, it's gorgeous!

I wore purple for my wedding ... wearing white is frowned upon, though I know South Asian brides who have worn white and gold for their weddings.

I hate most traditional wedding dresses, so I'd be much more likely to choose something like this... Maybe not this particular dress (ugh the sleeve!), but I still prefer it to anything my friends have gotten married in. Bridal gowns always look silly to me, there's something so old fashioned and costumey about the whole virginal puffball thing... so not me!
