The Original Supermodels Get Interviewed For Interview's September Issue

Aug 26 2013 - 11:51am

The gorgeous women who defined the term supermodel in the '80s and '90s are back on the September covers of Interview Magazine. Kate Moss [1], Naomi Campbell [2], Stephanie Seymour, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Amber Valletta all posed for Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, and Daria Werbowy, who wasn't a part of the original wave of supermodels but has earned that distinction in her own right, also landed one of the covers.

Together, the seven black-and-white photographs make up a beautiful portfolio, but it's the interviews with each woman [3] — and the partially nude pictures of them inside the magazine — that readers are sure to immerse themselves in. In one, Seymour declares quite plainly that she "would like to see fewer actors modeling."

That might be because these models are so good at what they do. See all of the covers here in the gallery.

"When I started out modeling, there weren't casting directors and there weren't stylists, so you just dealt directly with the designer," said Naomi Campbell [4]. "We were all much closer back then."

"I lived in New York for seven years, although I was always in denial about it," Kate Moss [5] said. "Even though I had an apartment there, I always pretended I was just visiting. I do love New York. But I'm a Londoner at heart."

"I would like to see fewer actors modeling," said Stephanie Seymour, "or if they're going to model to the extent that they are modeling, then I think that models should be actors."

"I love everything about fashion," Linda Evangelista said of her career. "I used to stay with Azzedine Alaïa until four in the morning, letting him stick pins into me because it was a dream."

"I never looked at magazines before I started modeling," said Christy Turlington. "Once I started modeling, I began to learn about these things, and magazines helped me to understand who was who."

"My mom was proud but very hands off. She didn't really know enough about the industry, and she didn't have the time to stop her life to go chaperone me," said Amber Valletta. "She was probably a little naïve."

"Sometimes I am still surprised that I'm a model and that people think I'm good-looking," said Daria Werbowy.
