Ah, the secret contents of a woman's handbag — it's a little slice of our lives, which is why we love J.Crew's quirky handbag shop feature. It literally spills the contents of J.Crew employees' bags for all of us to see. First up for inspection is Kim, J.Crew's head bridal designer. You can roll over the items — like her elegant Bottega Veneta wallet — for a quote from Kim on why it's important to her. As it turns out, the woman who makes us want to get married a 100 times just to wear the white dress uses a stress ball. Who thought making wedding dresses could be anything but fun?!
Curious as to what's going to hit it big in 2011? Well, J.Crew's rounded up its list of "11 New Classics" on its website. According to J.Crew, 2011 will be all about casual cool; schoolboy blazers, striped sweaters, and Tretorn sneakers are definite must haves. Take a peek at how they look when interpreted into the world of home decor!
>> In late November, J.Crew announced it was going private with the help of private equity firms Leonard Green & Partners and TPG Capital. But before the deal can be finalized, J. Crew has to hold a go-shop period, which allows competing bids to be made for the company, through Jan. 15.
Now, Bloomberg is reporting that both Sears and Urban Outfitters are studying J.Crew books and weighing rival bids. However, neither company has indicated that it will actually counter TPG and Leonard Green's offer, and it's worth noting that sometimes rival companies who have no intention of bidding use the go-shop period to learn more about their competitor. Most go-shop periods don't result in a rival bid.
San Francisco-based analyst Christine Chen notes that buying J.Crew "would be great for Sears, but horrible for J. Crew. J. Crew is positioned as aspirational, and Sears is not. It would have a negative impact on the J. Crew brand.” An Urban Outfitters buy makes less sense because it has overlapping customers with J.Crew, and J.Crew's sales are growing more slowly.

They say if you love something to let it go — if it comes back to you on sale, then it's yours to keep. So, I figured when these pretty pairs of ankle boots resurfaced at a discount, it was fate. These were the season's standouts for me — lace-up details, some with a wedge or a femme peep-toe. They're ideal for keeping things casual and chic in cold weather, and when the sun starts to shine, I'm lacing them up with a floral-printed dress or skirt. This week, I'm bidding San Fran farewell till after the New Year, and heading to Miami to soak up the sun and ring in the holiday on the beach. While I confess I'll probably spend most of the trip lounging by the shore or at the pool, there's more to pack than swimwear ($180). I'm adding something festive for my holiday parties, my Matt Bernson gladiators ($102, originally $169), and my favorite new bag. Take a peek at what I'm packing and shop for your own stylish vacay.
>> Whether it's your brother, buddy, or homie lover friend, we have nine gift ideas that are sure to impress him this holiday season. An awesome foldable bike for the mover and shaker, a cocktail set for the libations connoisseur, leather messenger bag for the one who carries it all . . . and more guy-approved fodder in the slideshow.
