Freaky or Fabulous? Jewelry Bugs Out

I've heard of some crazy things in fashion but never jewelry made out of dead bugs. Apparently, two 17 year olds, Katheryn Maloney and Brady Cullinan, of Sandwich (ha), MA, are selling jewelry made out of cicadas (a type of insect with large eyes) that are swarming Cape Cod this Summer. For $10 and a trip to the local farmers' market in Sandwich, you can have your very own earring or necklace made out of lacquered-insect corpses. I guess Fall clothes aren't the only things buggin' out. This is too freaky for words. What do you think?

I just read about this in the newspaper recently...I'm a Massachusetts native and my family spends time on the Cape every summer (where Sandwich is located). The kids have been selling them at fairs and such AND I guess some local boutiques have picked up a few pairs to sell in their stores. Personally, I think they're pretty hideous-looking and I'm surprised at how many people are wanting to wear them...but it's definitely creative and it's making them some money!

I hate bugs, so the idea of a large bug carcass hanging around my neck is a bit uncomfortable. A fake metal bug on a ring could be cool, though. Just not a real one.

I chose freaky because i'm afraid of bugs, but to be honest they don't look bad at all. They're actually kinda cool. I'd wear one if it wasn't a real bug.

These are NOT Cicadas! They are June Bugs and I hate them!! They are horribly gross and get stuck in your hair. I'd never ever wear them. Heck! I could probably walk outside right now and have my own LIVE jewelery. lol.... EEEKKK!

They'd be better if they weren't real. I have to echo cyrizzle's concerns about rotting jewelry and the possibility of squishing one. That's just nasty. And the idea of wearing a corpse (no matter what kind) as jewelry is slightly morbid.

Awhile ago I read about some jewelry designer who bejeweled LIVE cockroaches and then attached them to leashes which were attached to pins so that people could wear live cockroaches on their clothing, free to walk about a little bit. Needless to say if anyone ever approached me wearing one I would shriek and run away. Over all though I wonder how lucrative the live cockroach pins ended up being for this designer?
