Kate Middleton in Maroon Skirt Suit 2012

The Kate Middleton Effect Can Now Be Applied to the Skirt Suit, Too

Kate Middleton has the Midas touch when it comes to making just about anything seem like it should probably be in your closet, too. This covet-worthy list includes everything from her go-to nude L.K. Bennett pumps and dreamy Alexander McQueen wedding dress, to that iconic blue Issa wrap dress — and now, we think it's safe to assume we can add this skirt suit into the ranks. The royal beauty chose an oxblood-hued Paule Ka set to make her standout case for the skirt suit, and here are the only two reasons you need to, er, follow suit.

One: if you needed yet another reason to be convinced of this rich burgundy color's seasonal appeal, look no further. Two: the skirt suit — as worn by Kate — isn't nearly as stuffy or as matronly as we once imagined it to be. In fact, we're absolutely loving its fresh tailored feel (hello, double-breasted blazer!) and feminine edge (sometimes it's more fun to wear a girlie circle skirt to work). Thus, we're on board with her latest look and its versatility in the office-chic department. We'd say this is for the girl who doesn't always want to take the trouser approach to her work attire. It's Fall-appropriate (opaque black tights and black suede pumps included) and provides a perfect example of how to switch things up with polished finesse. If you're more of a boots-in-cold-weather girl, then a slick pair of riding-style boots will keep the professional outfit intact. Now, it's time to shop our favorite skirt-suit picks below.
