We have witnessed a fashion metamorphosis. After Holmes' recent Celebrity Style and the announcement that Katie and newfound fashion friend Victoria Beckham, more on that later, are creating a children's clothing line I got to thinking: wait, Katie Holmes was not always a style maven. Now I was not a Dawson's Creek fan, but I did enjoy Katie's performance in the fun-ride-of-a-film called "Go." But no, she never stood out on the red carpet or in glossies as being particularly stylish. She's lucky she has a lovable dimply pretty face because if not, I would have never noticed her (no offense!). But I notice young brimming fashionistas; that's my job and duty in life, after all.

Here's a little retrospective on Holmes. As you can see she has gone from an innocent, blah, slightly pudgy faced youngin' to a svelte and sophisticated lady. Holmes is about my age so I give her some credit after thinking back to what I wore seven years ago. That said, I always had some unique styling going on and it is this she lacks. I believe it's the unique and somewhat risktakers who have innate style.
This first pic is from the '98 Emmys; wait, is that a wedding dress?! The next is a poorly paired asymmetrical dress with a black cardigan - fashion no no - btw: she is at the "Eyes Wide Shut" premiere, coincidence much? Then she did asymmetry right in a lovely white pant outfit but what is with the unpolished hair & furry black clutch? Close, but no cigar. Then, we have the overdose of red look in '04 and under no circumstances is a red dress, red shoes, AND red clutch allowed on a red carpet. Enter metamorphosis. Katie is looking sleek and vibrant in Grecian turquoise with her new hubby - a big improvement. Which brings us to today where vive Le Smoking says it all.
When one marries rich (and famous), becomes BFF with someone named "Posh," and has the fashion world at her fingertips it would seem to me to be pretty easy to quickly adopt some "style." So what is that has made Holmes blossom into a young sophisticate? Money? Fame? A friend/stylist? Or is it personal style and she is embracing her innate talent? Whatever the reason, I've got a suspicious eye fixed on this one to see where her fashion persona goes next. What do you all think?
Hmm, before the whole 'craziness' she'd occasionally wear something really cute, but it was rare. Now it looks like she's being told what to wear because it's fashionable, so she looks uncomfortable and sometimes over-styled (possibly the influence of Victoria?). The clothes sort of wear her. I'd never thought to myself 'this woman has great style; she should design clothes', even children's clothes.
1I love watching her "grow up" in every sense in front of us. I think she looks great and am looking forward to her future styles! Great "rant" Fab!
2Hmm, yea, I see her as a puppet. I agree with you swwonder, it seems as thought she's always in the shadow of someone else's wing. I hope one day she could be comfortable enought to be herself.
3I think its clear shes being styled..either by a stylist, posh, or both. The whole Holmes-cruise union weirds me out...shes like his doll. poor girl probably cant pick anything for herself! maybe im overreacting i just have yet to get used to this couple
4I miss pudgy faced Katie in her badly matched hemlines and cardigans. I think she has no idea who she is anymore, so she morphs easily into whatever is placed in front of her to wear.
5Please help me! You said a black cardigan is a no-no. I agree that the outfit is totally weird-looking on Katie, but what is the specific no-no? I wear cardigans all the time - especially black ones. I am also not noted for being terribly stylish, however. I am hoping to improve.
6Fab - this is EXACTLY why I voted that you don't have to be born with style to look great. Or maybe that wasn't the point of your poll? Either way, I was thinking of Katie Holmes when I answered that! She basically got access to friends and money that made her look awesome!
eBennet - the problem with that outfit is that her dress is asymmetrical and then the shirt cuts horizontally across it. And covers it up in a non flattering way...
7Hi gals! Yes, this does correlate with my poll the other day. As for cardigans - I love them too! While they really go with almost everything, asymmetry is tricky. I would have paired that dress with a wrap or looser draped cardi as not to conflict with the sharp hemline along the bottom. Hope this makes sense!
xo
8I don't think she's very pretty; I never thought she had fashion sense. This whole marriage to Tom Cruise makes zero sense to me, but I guess now that she's in the big pond, someone is helping dress her. (And Posh is a scary-looking, if stylish, lady).
9Hmmm..yeah. She does look awfully uncomfy in those 'fashionable' clothes. She definately looks like she is just wearing something that someone tells her to wear.
10she has a really.. old taste.
11she'll look great when she's graying.
I also loved that movie Go, she always seems to be playing dressup in whatever she's wearing.
12I don't think she has any innate style. Every appearance she made prior to Tom was totally Joey from DC. With Armani at her fingertips and an obvious consultant for even the smallest coffee runs, she clearly makes no decisions herself. Did everyone forget the time when Sui was still undercover and she had some baby weight to lose, she looked totally disheveled. It wasn't until Suri was unveiled and when Tom took charge that she truly shined.
13She probably had to wait for Tom's money to get some style. Oh I only kid... Since my college roommate got me stuck on Dawson's Creek, I'll always love Katie--even with crazy Tom.
14I never liked her! and i still don't!
15Well I have to point out that most stars have stylists, even B-list ones. I'm pretty sure Katie HAD to have a professional sylist in her earlier days... just not a good one lol. Maybe she employed a close friend or family member.
16Her fashion metamorphosis is all due to the stylist she can afford.

Im posting my comments because I dont know where my comments went. I love Katie the person, actress and fashion Katie.
17She's coming to her own because back then she always love shopping and clothes but has always been preppy, conservative and girl next door Katie. But even that she's all growing up before our eyes she's become a true womanly hottie but her innocence and All American girl next door appeal is still there. Its good she added Armani to her resume when I recalled she was into Gap,Vera Wang and Caroline Herrera. She's always been a fave by stylists then and now she's on the wanted list of many. Another reason I love her style and even follows them because its comfortable, its simple not so in your face and its not slutty. Many may love Katie and some hate her but deep down they are intrigued and fascinated by her evidenced by many folks keeping an eyeful on every move she makes.
Who cares??? The girl is a nuts, plain and simple!!!! Anyone who would subject themselves and their child by marrying a gay man is either really dumb or isn't playing with a full deck of cards themselves. Fashionista, she is not, but she is a definite train wreck that we're all watching in slow motion.
18For me, she still looks like a girl wearing mother´s clothes!

She married a gay man who has fabulous taste in clothes. Mystery solved.
20sorry but she is just a plain Jane in fab, expensive designer clothes like her fem-bot BFF Posh.
21I agree that her style has improved, but she doesn't look comfortable in her clothes now. She looks like she's a lost little girl playing dress-up in designer clothes. At least when she was dressing badly, she looked comfortable. Now, whenever I see her, I just think awkward.
22Thats b/c
23A. she has more money now
B. she has "people" to pick things out for her
C. tom has to have her dress well to reflect on her
Gross.
hey ..she has a bigger account to shop with now..money is not a problem.
24yes and when I think myself seven years ago I can tell as well, I have changed for the better.
25Man... I want to be friends with Posh
26Wow, She really had no sense in fashion and probably still doesn't. Thank god for Posh.
27She's all grown upp...
28She's got money and friends and now she thinks she can design.
We shall see...
29Well, DUUUUUHHHHHH!!! She's married to TOM CRUISE. Not only has her fashion budget increased (probably) by, like, a MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR, but she's with someone who knows that daily life needs to be produced like a movie if you want to be super duper famous. He's a producer, and she's learning to be the production manager of her own image. What about it don't you get?
30I think she looks great in everything!! She's really beautiful!!
31I have to agree with swwonder. She doesn't always seem comfortable in what she wears. It's also may be something with the fact that "as Cruise's wife" or along that sort that may be because of it. I don't know.
32She has unlimited funds and a stylist. But everyone has a stylist these days.
33I think Katies very pretty - but still even now, she is not THAT stylish!
34i L00VE THAT RED DRESS*
35WHOA! && THAT SECONDD PiCTURE iS SOO CjUUTE*
36True that! her style has evolved 10 fold! while I agree that sometimes shje looks too old for age, she always looks elegant. It's crazy to see what she's wearing in some of thos eold pictures!
37Her clothes always seem to weat her as swwonder said. Actually the only dress out of the 3 bottom ones, that I'd actually believe is her style is the turquoise one, whatever clothes she's been wearing lately don't seem to be her style, she rarely seems comfortable.
38she actually was quite stylish for a bit before she met tom.. and it was the youthful fun kind of style, which i do not think are shown in any of these pictures.. anyways, i really did like how she dressed during that phase..
39I'm sorry but im blown away at how much plastic surgery they did to her nose and her face. Forget the clothes, which obviously needed the upgrade whatever the influence.
