Was Kenneth Cole's Runway Gimmick Just For Show?

Kenneth Cole Fall 2014 Runway Show | NY Fashion Week

If there's one thing we can expect from a Kenneth Cole production, it's that along with clothes, he'll be delivering some serious social commentary. And this season, it was in the form of a preshow short film starring Rachel Dratch and Alan Cumming as warring Instagrammers. In it, Alan lies about lavish vacation destinations while Rachel tweets about Spin class when she's actually lying in bed. Alan even rips the Kenneth Cole tag off his suit and blasts to his followers that he's in Armani. (Likewise, Rachel's heels aren't really Louboutins . . . ). They even — gasp! — lie about Fashion Week! The message? There's a difference between what's real and what's just for show. Our social media feeds aren't true-to-life documentaries, but rather curated "director's cuts" of our lives, and perhaps designer clothes and It bags are similar projections of who we would like to be.

While this thesis might not necessarily translate to his Fall 2014 collection, the looks that walked the Kenneth Cole runway are certainly for the postmodern woman. True to form, the designer sent out monochromatic looks in mostly black and the occasional white or red. Save for the occasional beaded herringbone collar, the looks skewed masculine. Pinstripes provided more than just men's suiting options, and hemlines were lowered to provide more coverage to this urban warrior. It might not have been real, but it was definitely a show.
