There are so many necklace styles out there. My latest obsession is ring necklaces, like this Made Her Think Ring Necklace ($209, originally $298). Jeweld necklaces have their place, but this style will lend downtown edge to any ensemble. Even on sale, it's still pretty pricey.

This Forever 21 Assorted Rings Necklace ($7) is way easier on the wallet, plus it has the same ring motif. It's not gunmetal like the MHT version, but I can roll with the bright silver shine.
