Fur and Feathers Were Flying at Marni Fall 2014

Feb 23 2014 - 3:59am

At Milan Fashion Week, the Marni [1] show is known for punctuating the more traditional shows with something a little more fun and original. But despite all the usual trademarks that make Marni unique, designer Consuelo Castiglioni also managed to include a whole host of trends we've seen already on the Fall catwalks. Among them, fur trims, ruffles, wide-leg pants, bustiers over sweaters, metallic coats, painted prints, belted fur coats, and exaggerated sleeves.

Oddly, the show which Marni reminded us of mostly, in terms of silhouette at least, was London's J.W. Anderson [2], which featured the same heavy fabrications, bustier details, high necks, wide sleeves, and long skirts. What it didn't have was Marni's closing story, full of feathers and fringes, used in huge quantities across skirts, coats, and ponchos in earthy shades, or the bright hues of printed fur coats and other outerwear, including one statement silver padded coat with a white fur trim. These were 100 percent Marni: bright, bold, and full of just the right amount of knowing wit.
