>> Marni is entering the furniture business with a line of chairs — but instead of plush chaise lounges upholstered with its signature prints, it hired ex-prisoners to make metal chairs covered in multicolored plastic netting.

The Italian fashion house designed the 100-chair collection for this month's Salone del Mobile in Milan (April 17 to 22) and hired a group of former Colombian prison inmates to produce them with the aim of helping them readjust to social and working life.

Marni will use the chairs as props this Spring when it photographs its employees in Milan for a photo exhibit by filmmaker Francesco Jodice and in its offices and stores around the world. The chairs will only be sold at the Marni boutique in Milan — with proceeds donated to the institute ICAM of Milan — but you can take a look at all of them in the gallery.
Marni Collaborates With Ex-Colombian Prisoners For a New Chair Collection
This month, Marni's presentation at the Salone del Mobile 2012 will focus on a new collection of chairs crafted in Colombia by ex-prisoners. The collection includes 100 chairs featuring metal bases and multicolored PVC threads. The silhouettes reflect the popular seating style used by local Colombian families but have unmistakable Marni features like colorblocked patterns and on-trend colors.

The chairs are also a part of the "L'Arte del Ritratto" project, which features them in a photo exhibition created in collaboration with the photographer and filmmaker Francesco Jodice. The chairs are used as props for a series of portraits of Marni employees from different departments. The collection of chairs, along with the photo exhibition and accompanying video, will be presented at the Milan Marni boutique during Salone del Mobile from April 18-22. After Salone del Mobile, the chairs will find homes in various Marni boutiques worldwide, where the local employees will have a chance to pose with the famous seats to keep the exhibition going. Proceeds raised from the sale of the chairs will be donated to the institute ICAM of Milan, a project that supports children of imprisoned mothers.

For the full gallery of chairs, head over to Fashionologie.

Marni Fall 2012
Marni designer Consuelo Castiglioni showed a world of colorblock, structured silhouettes, and small-scale prints for Fall 2012. '60s mod styling got a dose of Eastern influence on the runway — models were clad in bright shift dresses, trousers, and skirt suits, almost always topped with a boxy coat and cinched at the waist with wide leather belts. The designer also offered up slick coats in luxe exotic looks like python, patent leather, and plaid-print furs, which proved visually stunning alongside head-to-toe black and gold jacquard and floral-print ensembles. Hopefully, you haven't tired of the hosiery trend yet; white tights were layered under each look (even pants), then finished with Kabuki-style platform Mary Janes for a vaguely Oriental feel. Get the rest of the details below.
- Trends: Jacquard prints, colorblock, fur vests, white tights, boxy coats with oversize pockets.
- Colors: Red, black, gray, baby blue, camel.
- Key Piece: The sleek black python coat; the matching jacquard pantsuit.
- Accessories: Jeweled brooches, colorful sunglasses, structured satchels, metallic-toe heels, wide waist belts.
- Who Would Wear It: Girls with a retro-chic sensibility and a knack for playing with prints.
Marni Fall 2012
>> Consuelo Castiglioni's vision for Fall 2012 looks something like this: polished, bright, and just a tad '60s — with a dash of Orientalism thrown in for good measure. Solid hues — tomato red, camel, grey, and baby blue — provide a high-contrast colorblock palette, while python, plaid, gold jacquard, and patent leather offer texture. Silhouettes are boxy, layered, and slightly round-shouldered on top, with knee-length skirts and creased ankle trousers lending a sense of straight-cut stability on bottom. "I was interested in architecture and controlled lines," Castiglioni explained.

Clean lines aside, this wouldn't be Marni without a fair amount of quirk. This season, it came in the form of oversize utility pockets, fold-over fur collars, opaque white tights, and gold-tipped platform Mary Janes.
