The '50s Have Never Looked Better Than at Miu Miu Spring '13

It seems as though Miuccia Prada took a little inspiration from Mad Men for Miu Miu's Spring 2013 collection then took swing coats, pencil skirts, and bralet tops with it into undeniably modern times.

It seems as though Miuccia Prada took a little inspiration from Mad Men for Miu Miu's Spring 2013 collection then took swing coats, pencil skirts, and bralet tops with it into undeniably modern times. Denim, vinyl, and duchess satin rendered the elegant silhouettes a touch edgy, a vibe highlighted by the upswept glasses and high-cut bangs. But the real standouts were the killer accessories: mink stoles, crushed leather handbags, rhinestone and leather necklaces, and of course knife-sharp pointy-toe shoes. Watch to enjoy it all!

Miu Miu Spring 2013

Miuccia Prada delved into the past, specifically the '50s, for Miu Miu's effortlessly ladylike Spring '13 collection.

Miuccia Prada delved into the past, specifically the '50s, for Miu Miu's effortlessly ladylike Spring '13 collection. "It's elegance done a different way," said Prada. With that notion in mind, she created impossibly refined dark denim skirt suits paired with crop tops and point-toe pumps, pencil skirts with patent jackets, and smart shift dresses worn under long car coats — all accessorized with leather gloves and fold-over satchels to complete the composed feminine look. While fur is not usually associated with Spring collections, Prada broke the barriers with an assortment of fur stoles slung over the shoulder and colored fur coats. Meanwhile, textural pieces, like the crinkled skirts and tops and dimensional abstract prints, showed off a modern element in Prada's chic offerings. Most notable was the forest-green car coat paired with the patent tan-colored pencil skirt — easy, unfussy, with just the right amount of panache.

  • Trends: Oversize silhouettes, leather, statement prints.
  • Colors: Indigo, white, tan, brown, red, forest green, gray.
  • Key Piece: The denim skit suits were the perfect juxtaposition between casual and chic.
  • Accessories: Leather fold-over tote bags, crackled point-toe pumps, stone bracelets, ballet flats, leather gloves, jewel-embellished flat sandals, fur scarves, point-toe flats, collar necklaces.
  • Who Should Wear It: We can see fashion daredevil Solange Knowles in the sleek denim skirt suits and Carey Mulligan in Miu Miu's silk printed sheath dresses.

Miu Miu Spring 2013

Miuccia Prada has never been shy about referencing the '50s or '60s (we submit Prada's Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 collections as proof of this), but her Spring 2013 collection for Miu Miu took the two decades' ladylike style and subverted it with unexpected materials and accents.

The first look that came down the runway? A dark denim coat and high-waisted skirt paired with a white midriff top and green leather gloves. The styling here was '60s couture, but the attitude was uniquely modern. The same can be said of a few fabrics that look like they'd been tie-dyed here or there; shiny, almost plastic materials on elegant coats and skirts; and brightly colored furs with unregulated striped sections of black.

The overwhelming feeling was one of contrasts, and Prada herself got to the bottom of that. "It's about elegance, not elegance. Couture, not couture. Tailoring, not tailoring," she told WWD. Was it Spring, but not Spring, too? That would explain all the lovely furs.

It's So Easy to Turn Miu Miu's Glitter Boots Into a Manicure

Science hasn't proven this theory correct — yet — but it seems that adding glitter to boots makes the average person more likely to develop full-blown shoe lust.

Science hasn't proven this theory correct — yet — but it seems that adding glitter to boots makes the average person more likely to develop full-blown shoe lust. Could be why these Miu Miu Chelsea boots ($750) have garnered a cult following over the past year, frequently popping up as a street-style staple. If you've come down with Miu Miu fever, too, let the shoes inspire your next manicure. Paint your nails with a deep blue polish such as Sinful Colors in Hot Spot ($2), then apply two coats of Essie's Stroke of Brilliance effect ($8). It couldn't be easier to create this magpie's dream — and that's a fact.
