New Fashion Designers 2012
5 Designers to Watch Out For This Fashion Week — and Why We Love Them
Who: Nary Manivong, Ally Hilfiger
What: Downtown cool, modeled around the classic shirtdress; menswear tailoring with a decidedly feminine feel; light, airy fabrics and bold hues; clean, modern silhouettes with a worn-in appeal.
Why: Nary Manivong is a cutting-edge New York designer; Ally Hilfiger, the scion of fashion legend Tommy Hilfiger. Together, they are the masterminds behind NAHM, a name formed from both of their initials that also happens to be the Laotian word for "water." By joining forces, the two have created a straightforward collection of easy pieces, stemming from one common, classic staple: the shirtdress. NAHM's iterations include flirty, asymmetrical hems, deconstructed silhouettes, and unexpected fabrics (including some pieces in polished wool). The line has already found fans in Byrdie Bell and stylish sisters Lizzy and Georgia May Jagger — just a few of the star-studded pack of longtime friends that Ally boasts — but we admire the young talent's decision to break from the family mold and create something that is versatile, personal, and worthy of our full attention.
