Barbie Takes Over Vogue Italia's Black Issue

Barbie's on a roll! After showing a rad collection at New York Fashion Week earlier this year, the icon will make her next debut as the star in Vogue Italia's upcoming Black Issue.

"Barbie has been an icon for whole generations, which is why I really wanted to give a strong sign in step with the times, and dedicate the anniversary issue to Black Barbie," said Franca Sozzani, editor in chief of Vogue Italia.

The supplement issue will feature Black Barbie styled in an array of designer creations ranging from fancy evening gowns to bedazzled swimsuits. The brand will also be launching a new collection of black Barbie dolls next year, named the So In Style dolls, designed to look more authentic with fuller lips, a wider nose, curly hair, and distinctive cheek bones.

yay! i want the magazine and the barbie when it comes out. and the dearth of black models shouldn't just be addressed in editorials, it should be addressed in high end advertisments as well. one of the clearly telling and ridiculous things about the first all black vogue italia issue and was that all the editorials were of black models and most of the advertisements featured white models.

I think this is so cool. I wish I owned the black issue from last year. I don't understand why black models aren't used more often. I really don't.

I think it's a really fun idea, but in the back of my head I keep hearing "couldn't they have hired actual black models for the black issue?" The fashion industry is predominantly white, and I thought last year's issue was a step in the right direction.

What a fun idea. I have always loved the Barbies that were not the original model. In the 80s and 90s Mattel did Special Edition dolls that were part of their world collection and they did have distinctive features.
