Rachel Roy NYFW Fall 2012 Interview

Hi, it's Allison McNamara and you're watching Fab Flash at New York Fashion Week. Rachel Roy is known for mixing and matching colors and prints, and I went backstage at her presentation where she gave me a few tips on how to perfect this look. So for me, if you want to play it very safe, mix a lot of colors in the same tone. And what I mean by that, when you see the collection, there'll be a lot of different greens mixed and it's such an easy way to kind of feel modern and feel a bit confident but it's so safe doing that. Or mix them, a lot of different tones of purple and so that will always work for you. And then with your prints, I like to mix a graphic with a feminine. So what I mean by that is mix a stripe with a floral or mix a tie dye with a plaid. That's pretty much a sure bet. It's again, that whole opposite thing. It really does work for me. I think that a woman wears so many hats and we have so many aspects to us that we are not one thing we represent so much within us and that kind of comes across for me as a designer through mixing prints and colors. For fall, Rachel rich greens and purples made fresh with tweed and leather. Fall is inspired. She's always the same woman. She's who I aspire to be but she's at a different point in her life or her travels, and I watched a documentary called "Women in the Dirt." And it's about female landscape architects and how they take these strong, architectural, linear lines use elements from nature and put it into an urban setting. And it's the story of balance, once again, balancing opposites. It's probably until the day I die what I will be inspired by. And all of the colors come from this documentary. New saturation, so hopefully I was able to achieve in very natural colors, so landscape green, the pine green, the moss green. But at the end of the day, I always want to create collections that although I am inspired by very creative women, I want my customer to walk away with a silhouette that she doesn't even know what collection it comes from, that it just lasts in her wardrobe and makes her feel strong and confident and hopefully happy. And, Rachel, not only sets fashion trends, she also can see into the future. I'm a palm reader, I like to read people's palms. My grandfather on my dad's side was a palm reader in India. So I might be embellishing that just a bit, but I'd like to think I'm a palm reader.
