6 Standout Shoe Trends to Look Forward to This Fall

Aug 7 2013 - 8:00am

It's not our fault that there is only one month left of Summer! But can we look on the bright side? It's time to talk about the spectacular shoe trends from the Fall 2013 runways, which means they are hitting stores right about now. Of course there were the overarching styles, like pointy-toed pumps, ankle-strap heels, and Winter boots, but we also saw many microtrends that are definitely worth noting. Silhouettes like the sandal boot popped up at 3.1 Phillip Lim, Kenneth Cole [1], and Kenzo [2], while the power of the menswear-inspired loafer reigned supreme at Tommy Hilfiger, Tory Burch [3], and Marni [4]. For the print-lover, designers like Roberto Cavalli [5] and Erdem [6] offered up sweet florals and powerful animal patterns, and the edgy-cool boots at Versace [7] and Chanel spoke to our inner style renegade.

Click through to see some of our favorite footwear styles for Fall, and let us know which ones you're getting ready to snap up.

Sandal Boots

We spied sandal boots and knee-high gladiator styles [8] on some of the Spring '13 runways, and it has definitely proved to be a lasting trend for Fall. Jason Wu [9], Phillip Lim, Kenneth Cole [10], and more designers featured the daring shoe silhouette with their cold-weather collections, offering a chic alternative to the classic boot. Wear them alone through Fall, then add thick knit tights for a fresh Winter look.

Lace-Up Heels

Whether they were smart, preppy block heels on the Chloé runway or sexy sandals at Ohne Titel [17] and Jason Wu [18], it was all about lace-up details for Fall '13. We love how these styles look with or without tights, and it's an easy silhouette that can go from sweet to saucy in a snap, depending on the rest of your outfit. Wear lace-up wedges with cuffed jeans and a chunky sweater, or pair an LBD with lace-up stilettos for evening [19].

Pretty Prints

While some of Fall's clothing collections were sleek and solid, designers like Roberto Cavalli [30], Joseph Altuzarra [31], and Erdem [32] Moralioglu offered up bold prints below the knee. From pumps to ankle booties to smart flats, we're loving the season's crop of cool, colorful patterned shoes.

Loafer Detailing

Tassels, chains, and wingtips peppered the Fall footwear collections, with Chanel, Tommy Hilfiger, Dries Van Noten, and more showing off sleek, schoolgirl-chic loafer styles. Whether they were preppy flats or dressier stacked heels, it was apparent to anyone following Fashion Week that the Ivy League look is going to be big again for Fall. Back to school, indeed.

Lug Soles

One of the more controversial shoe trends to hit the runway was the lug sole. Seen at Stella McCartney [63], Rochas, and Carven, the tough rubber soles — intended to provide friction and durability — may not be as pleasing to the eye, but they certainly are interesting. Critics were divided on the look, but we're betting this trend will be big on the street-style scene this year.

Tough Boots

We all have a bit of an inner badass, and designers like Prabal Gurung [68], Hedi Slimane, and Donatella Versace [69] played to that personality type for Fall '13. Their runways offered up street-chic boots with edgy details like spikes, studs, chains, and over-the-top buckles — and in the case of Alexander McQueen [70], rugged silhouettes juxtaposed with sweet-looking pearls. This trend is perfect for the girl who wants to show off her tough side, or just add some sharpness to her girlie LBDs.
