A friend of mine recently complained that her new James Perse top, much like this James Perse Slouch Fleece Top ($165), was ruined by yellow pit stains. Sucks. Pit stains are ugly, but they're not the end of the world. The first plan of attack is to try to prevent them. Should they succeed in making their way onto your shirt, there are ways to obliterate them. Mua-ha-ha . . .

Sweat alone doesn't cause armpit stains. The chemicals from your antiperspirant are also to blame. The best thing to do is to switch from an antiperspirant to strictly a deodorant. I did. If you must use an antiperspirant, try an intense one that will more actively stop sweat, like Klima ($25), which you apply once every five days.
To remove pit stains, spray Shout Laundry Stain Remover ($5) on the problem area and let it sit for five minutes. Then take a brush and scrub the area until the stains have been removed. You can also use RID White-Wash Dye Powder ($3) to get yellow stains out. A more obvious solution is to wear loose-fitting tops so that the arm holes don't stick to your armpit. Lastly, avoid wearing a jacket or cardigan during sweaty times; the extra layer will force your top to stick to your armpit. Am I missing anything?

also wear a deodorant that helps prevent stains. I swear by Kiehls!
1I use Garment Guards...they fantastic!
2$25?! And you only put it on every 5 days? Umm what about when you shower. I don't think that would work for me, it's embedded in me to apply something on my underarms every day. Ha.
I find Shout works great. I swear by it.
3i have never had pit stains but i never use deoderant either so maybe that's why...i just don't feel the need for it...i never stink either...i have people to warn me if i ever did!
4omg, skigurl. i am insanely jealous. only in the past few months my hormones have gone off the deepend and i've been sweating like crazy.

6Ugh, I don't think I'll ever escape sweat.
7One of the most annoying things to have to deal with!
8My grandma always used two crushed up aspirin in a bowl with about 1/2 cup warm water. Lay the stained part of the shirt in the bowl and leave it there for a couple of hours while you do other laundry then toss it in the wash and it works great!
9Or...see your dermatologist and get botox under your arms! Sigh, I miss my HMO and my $10 co-pays.
10Agree with emg61--- Kiehls deodorant is expensive, but it's just really nice, and it works.
11Do any of these things work if it's a shirt you've put in the dryer already? Does the dryer set in the stains?
12I have heard about using the asprin, and I would also try oxyclean. It works wonders on my other whites, so I would think it would work in this case as well.
13i recall using rid white wash several years ago and it didn't work for me. i had to throw out my favorite white button down.
14happily i can't remember the last time i had a pit stain issue.
secret's clinical strength is my favorite deodeo and only costs about $8.
I only get them from spray mens deodorant. I use mens deodorant because I prefer the smell, so I use a roll on and put that on before anything else so it dries while I get my outfit sorted.
I also use oxyaction stain remover on all my whites and bicarb soda stain remover on everything else. Helps with all stains not just pit stains!
15I've tried all the baking soda, Oxyclean, bleach, salt and lemon juice combinations to get rid of the stains on my tops, hasn't made a difference at all. Then I did a washing at my brothers, and the stains almost disappeared - I think sometimes there's nothing you can do, it also depends on the quality of the washing water.
16I use Klima Antiperspirant. It is the best deodorant in the world. It doesn't stain your clothes, it keeps you smelling fresh and totally dry. They say you can go up to 5 days between application, but I use it daily anyway. Sometimes, when I skip a shower on the weekends, I notice that the deodorant still works great. I also use Klima's surefoot spray on my feet. You know how we all have our "stinky shoes" that we love to wear without socks, but they always smell bad? I do not have that problem any more
17I always heard that Not sweating was a bad thing. Any one know if that's true?
18Instead of trying to treat the symptoms, treat the cure. The condition is called "Trichomycosis axillaris". Look it up. Be thankful you only have it in your armpits.
