Is Style Something That Is Taught Or Innate?

I think it can be both. Some people are raised with it while others may have to learn it but it's a combo of each. You don't just wake up one day and become Oscar de la Renta.

I think style can be learned but it can take effort and making it a priority. However, there are definitely people who have a built in creative talent for style and I'm willing to bet that that creativity extends to other parts of their lives such as home, and thinking out of the box for solutions to problems.

I voted for a combo of both, but perhaps its more based on your experiences in life? some one for the west coast might have a different idea of what is stylish compared to someone from new york or another part of the country or vice versa. Style always seemed to me to be more of a signature look, a self-confidence in your image anyway, with dashes of what is "fashionble" thrown in. But maybe i'm wrong? I don't know. I think if you're aware of "style", you must have some of it at least, right? which means everyone on this post must be stylish! :)

I think you can teach a person to dress well or to what suits them. But a unique and innate knowledge of style I think you are born with.

It can be taught - or given in the case of some celebs from stylists. I've learnt everything I know about style from my mum and various books and magazines. That's helped me develop my style. But I still trust my style intuition. If I don't like it, I don't like it. This is what makes me unique.

I think it's a combo, there's a certain amount you seem to be born with, like the things you choose without knowing they are a trend, it's just what you like. And then there are things that are learned, like what colors of clothes/makeup look best on you...things like that. Learning how to dress the body you have, not the body you want is another learned thing.

i have often wondered this myself. i think you can learn to be stylish, by obseerving others who have style and copying their looks, like celebrities for example, but then i have often met people in my life who are just so stylish in evrerything they wear. and its not just beauty, its an originality that i think some people are just born with. i really admire that in some women (and envy it)

It can be either. I don't think they compete, those who have it don't need to be taught, and those who don't have it NEED to be taught. Look at some of the celebrity disasters, suddenly walk out one day looking very nice. It's learnable. AND it doesn't hurt to have a LOT of money.

Some of both, for sure. The people who can build a funky, unique style (like Gwen Stefani in my opinion, although I know others disagree) are definitely born with it. But, anyone can learn to present themselves better.

I think it's a little bit of both, too. I grew up in North Dakota, where having style meant who had the tightest jeans and biggest belt buckle! I had to learn to shop for and wear all of the "stylish" things I saw in magazines, but I like to think that the fact that I even considered stepping away from the cowboy/farmer look must mean I have some sense of innate style!

good question! I think it is combi of both. You will subconsciously get influenced by trends around you, but you will somehow evolve your own style. For me, I am not one of those 'emo/punk/goth' types (too old for that) but I totally rock the dark eye colours and black nails and jet black hair, and sometimes black clothes (never all at once of course) simply cos i think they suit me, and I like that look. over the years, somehow no matter how different I look, somehow I still look the same. some pple just dun have an eye for style i think. but i am just naturally quite style conscious.

I definitely think it's a bit of both! I grew up with my mom's fashion advice and I still ask her for her opinion on everything, even though I'm in my 20s and we live more than 4,500 miles apart from each other. When I shop, I take photos of what I see and send them to her!! Pathetic!!! But I do think that some people just have an natural ability to whip together a fabulous outfit - I often have to look for inspiration, but I think I can put together my own outfits (with a little help, that is! ;) )
