Tanya Taylor Spring 2013

There's a reason why Tanya Taylor made our "designers to watch" list, and it was reinforced tenfold at tonight's Spring 2013 presentation at the MoMA. The up-and-coming designer — known for her playful sensibility and vintage-inspired prints — traveled to the 1960s this time around, showing off a retro lineup of beachy separates. Taylor riffed on a brighter pastel palette (everything from coral pinks to louder tangerines were fair game) and applied it to below-the-knee swing skirts, printed cropped trousers, billowy jumpsuits, and mod car coats. What's more, her signature wit and palpable love of nostalgic silhouettes emerged via a renewed set of summery wares. The beloved crop top was given a sweeter bralette shape, the bomber jacket got a decidedly feminine upgrade, and the classic blazer took on a much boxier finish. Bottom line: Tanya Taylor's sunny pieces may evoke a throwback vibe, but they certainly beg to be worn now.

  • Trends: Sequin florals, wider swing silhouettes, ultraboxy outerwear, cutouts, and even more variations on the crop top.
  • Colors: Rainbow pastels that range from coral pink and tangerine to eggshell yellow, white, and black.
  • Key Piece: The outfit of an embellished floral crop top and a crisp, white, wide-leg trouser.
  • Accessories: Printed headscarves and two-tone sandals.
  • Who Should Wear It: Quirkier style-setters with a penchant for old-school flair — think Kirsten Dunst, Rashida Jones, and Chloe Sevigny.
