If there were any doubts about Tom Ford's place in pop culture, they were pretty well assuaged earlier this year when Jay Z dedicated an entire song to the designer. So it only makes sense that in his latest collection, Ford would reference his name check.
In the middle of his Fall 2014 show, Ford sent out two sparkly dresses that looked like jerseys, each of which bore the designer's name and the number 61, his year of birth. Underneath the number, the word Molly is crossed out, a clear and fairly meta reference to Jay Z's lyrics, "I don't pop Molly — I rock Tom Ford."
At the time, the designer called the name check flattering, but is he now growing tired of the limelight? His last handful of collections were stuffed with capital-F fashion, but this one — with the exception of the jerseys and a few extravagantly colored fur and exotic skin pieces — was staid by comparison. Still, there's something to be said for classic and elegant clothes executed beautifully, and the rest of this collection was filled with pieces that fall under that description.
