Rules Were Made to Be Broken: Pair Navy and Black For a Cool Spring Look

Let's discuss one of the oldest fashion rules in the book: don't wear black and navy together, or you shall be shunned from the style community and left in the middle of Lincoln Center to be publicly humiliated (we made that last part up, but you see where we're going here).

Let's discuss one of the oldest fashion rules in the book: don't wear black and navy together, or you shall be shunned from the style community and left in the middle of Lincoln Center to be publicly humiliated (we made that last part up, but you see where we're going here). The oft-ridiculed pairing was pulled off on Spring runways from Lanvin, Victoria Beckham, Stella McCartney, and more and has been road-tested by style mavens like Alexa Chung and Chloë Moretz. The look is absurdly easy to achieve — it can be as simple as pairing a navy tank with black jeans, tucking a black tee into a navy pencil skirt, or just wearing black tights with your favorite navy dress. No matter how you try it, the trick is to keep your navy truly navy — if it's dangerously close to being black, it'll just look like you got dressed in the dark (unless, of course, you really did get dressed in the dark, in which case we can't help you). Top Oscars Trend: Flirty, Flippy Eyeliner

Makeup at the Oscars was a little more traditional in 2012, but that didn't stop Hollywood's finest from keeping up with the trends.

Makeup at the Oscars was a little more traditional in 2012, but that didn't stop Hollywood's finest from keeping up with the trends. Winged eyeliner is practically everywhere these days, and it took the red carpet by storm for the year's most-anticipated red-carpet event. Every other starlet seemed to be sporting her own version of the look, and the shapes ranged from Jennifer Lopez's chic double-winged style to Zoe Saldana's stretched-out cat-eye and Petra Nemcova's blackout lids. Take a gander at the coolest looks that took wing now.

Trend Report: Awesome Eyeliner at the Grammys

Looks like we're in for another awards season sprinkled with pretty retro looks.

Looks like we're in for another awards season sprinkled with pretty retro looks. At the Grammys this time around, tons of beautiful women showed up with vintage-style winged eyeliner. It was on everyone: Adele had perfect late '60s wings, Katy Perry wore her pinup girl look, and Nicki Minaj took things to extremes. Even Lady Gaga was wearing winged eyeliner underneath her mask. Winged eyeliner is so flattering that its ubiquity is no surprise on the red carpet. Why wouldn't you wear something that spells instant sex appeal? Now if the rest of us could only get makeup artists to come along and help us with the liquid liner, we could all be wearing it, too.

SAG Awards Trend Alert: Headband Braids

Headband braids are always popular, but they dominated the hairstyles at the 2012 SAG Awards.

Headband braids are always popular, but they dominated the hairstyles at the 2012 SAG Awards. Glee star Dianna Agron chose a messy fishtail version of the look that only came three-quarters of the way across her forehead, making for the most fashion-forward braid of the evening. The award for most romantic take on the braid goes to The Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco, who wore a thick plait accentuated by lots of free tendrils that gave the style an old-fashioned feel. And the most subtle headband braid at the SAGs was probably Extra host Renee Bargh's minibraid, which actually did look more like a headband than any of the others. It's all just further proof that complex braids are here to stay.

People's Choice Awards Trend Alert: Pretty as a Peach

Orange is the color of 2012, and the starlets at the People's Choice Awards certainly seemed cognizant of it.

Orange is the color of 2012, and the starlets at the People's Choice Awards certainly seemed cognizant of it. Peach was everywhere — on lips nails, cheeks, and quite a few dresses, too. Demi Lovato, in fact, wore the color head to toe, and Lea Michele, Miley Cyrus, Emma Stone, and Jennifer Lawrence all had peach lip or nail accents as well. Spring is only a few weeks ahead, so we wouldn't be surprised to see the shade become a dominant color on the red carpet all the way through May.

Trendspotting: The Duffle

If you're looking to invest in a worthy Fall accessory, look no further than the duffle bag.

If you're looking to invest in a worthy Fall accessory, look no further than the duffle bag. As this trio of style-setting blondes proves, the arm candy exudes both fashion and function — and we love when those worlds collide in one lust-worthy creation. Kirsten Dunst and Kate Moss each opt for luxe, leather versions from Louis Vuitton, in their own respectively sophisticated hues, while Sienna Miller selects a covetable carryall from Burberry Prorsum's 2012 Resort. Each signals a polished finish for day-to-day basics, and seems particularly perfect in rich leather and deep colors for Fall. To channel the same classic-cum-cool style with your own luxe duffle, just shop our editor's picks.

Trend Alert: '70s-Style, Bowl-Cut Bangs

A few years back, it seemed that bowl haircuts were about to make a comeback.

A few years back, it seemed that bowl haircuts were about to make a comeback. And while the trend never seemed to take off, perhaps bowl cut-style bangs are the next best thing. Recently, Three's Company, Chrissy Snow-type fringe has been seen on the likes of Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Mena Suvari. Shorter and straight in middle and longer on the ends, call the look a blunt bang/bowl bang hybrid, if you will. But most importantly, will you be knocking on the door of this trend?

Nail Polish

Why You Should Go For the Gold . . . Polish, That Is

Red may be a classic nail polish shade, but as Katie Holmes proved during her appearance on The Tonight Show yesterday evening, gold is a pretty decent alternative.

Red may be a classic nail polish shade, but as Katie Holmes proved during her appearance on The Tonight Show yesterday evening, gold is a pretty decent alternative. Not only can the metallic wear as a neutral, but because of its lustrous finish, it instantly dresses up the nails. It's also versatile enough to go with an urban style of skinny jeans and fringed boots to something a bit more elegant, like a cocktail dress. You can even use different textures and hues of the color to create two trendy styles: the ombré manicure or the one-nail-painted-a-different-shade look.
