Vogue Africa — Will There Ever Be One?

I think it's about time we have Vogue magazine in Africa. If not for the continent (Vogue Africa) then let at least one country do it. I actually love the idea of having Vogue Africa for the whole continent. Maybe in some way this will help bring us together (think Pan-Africanism). I Do agree with you guys Africa has a lot going on right now to be worrying about vogue . But we have to understand that in way the Mag might expose the artists of Africa in a way that we've never seen before. Another thing is that we do not have to wait for vogue to think of coming to Africa , We should be able to do something ourselves as Africans .

You all make good points. I guess I was reading this more as "this is something we as americans need to do for africa!" To which my reaction was "there are other things i'd rather do for africa." When I went to the blog that posted this, I realized that this was an african woman lamenting the fact that vogue doesn't have an African edition. That actually changes my perspective.

Some of you are really misinformed and maybe downright ignorant. Maybe if you people travel more often especially to Africa then you will know that Africa is not all about rape, starvation, abuse etc. America and other western countries have problems too, there are people starving in America, being raped and abused so, what gives you the right to make it seem that Africa suffers from that alone? Stop watching what your television shows you about Africa and experience Africa yourself.

As a black South African and African woman, I think it's completely condescending that someone should think that all we have to focus on is starvation, rape, abuse...etc. All countries in the world have their issues and there is crime in rape in 1st world countries too. Having said that, I read Vogue, W, wallpaper, nylon, harper's bazaar, vanity fair, and ARISE (love it!). We have South African Marie Claire, Elle, Glamour, Oprah, Cosmopolitan etc.... We have fashion weeks every season and my local mall has Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Paul Smith and varies other stores that stock Etro, Bottega, Commes, Chanel, Ralph and Valentino to name a few. SO... why should we not have Vogue.Get the point??!!

If there's a market, then do it. The reason that it hasn't happened, I suspect, is that a lot of people would find it in poor taste to celebrate luxury and wealth in a continent where so many have no wealth. That said, it's not as if that's prevented luxury brands from moving into Africa. There's a lot of money and culture to celebrate in Africa. If there are people who want it, give it to them.

South africa has vogue and many african countris have fashion magazines such as nigeria's arise magazine which is very vogue like.

Yes Africa has all these problems but that's not all the continent has to offer, the world has the idea that all Africans are poor, disease ridden people. We also have great art, fashion and rich diverse cultures.

why should Africans be the exception of regions that have to sort out their other priorities before they get a Vogue? China, Brazil, Russia etc (although not continents) had constituents who wanted their own Vogue and they got one; it should be up to Africans to determine what priorities represent them and not for us to presume to know what they are or how Africans should be represented

These are great images, but I have to agree that an African Vogue is not a priority for that region. However, sometimes images can inspire, celebrate and elevate and combined with words, who knows? Maybe they could draw attention to the needs of people there from their own perspective and not from that of Westerners?

Are u kidding me?? in a continent ripped with poverty, starvation, rape, abuse and a multitide of issues that we cannot fathom, we're actually rooting for a fashion magazine as a symbol of triumph over these issues? There are much more critical things to achieve than touting some fashion magazine.

Um... while these covers are great, on my list of problems in Africa that I would like to see remedied, a lack of fashion magazines are pretty much at the bottom. Additionally, even these covers seem to cater to a western beauty standard. I'm not sure that we need to spread that to Africa.

In another blog, I noted that a successful Vogue Africa would singlehandedly present condé nast with its biggest achievement to date, particularly in an economic environment where luxury and elite products/services are having to cater to a wider, more globally aware and dynamic market. The continent, precisely because of its diversity, constitutes an artistic (not just limited to fashion or models either) spectrum like no other. But then again there are so many political, social and economic dynamics (beyond just fashion) when it comes to magazines - particularly those with a global profile like Vogue - that the feasibility of a project like this is like...loooow. But if it existed, you could def count me in as a subscriber!
