FabSugar: All of your collection pieces have this gorgeous red-carpet quality to them; how do you go about paring that down to take on a casual, contemporary dress line?
Zac Posen: Well I think in our collection, sort of beneath and within the topical detailing, at the heart of it, I'm very deeply obsessed with construction. It all has to do with either teaching construction to the consumer, playing with it, having humor with it through drape or through seaming — and obviously most importantly, to highlight and shape a woman's body and make it the most flattering. So [with the Lord & Taylor dresses], what I think I can bring to this price point is really well-cut clothing. I think with the Z Spoke collection, it is really fun to build because we are able to build on the trends that we know are going to happen and bring them at a really accessible price point. It's very gratifying and sort of at a very different mindset than when I build my collection, where I'm physically, emotionally draping and building, definitely challenging myself with how far I can push the most glamorous, most luxurious pieces and gowns that exist in the world. We try to bring and preserve artistry in clothing. I've always loved designer clothing, but I feel like a t-shirt should still be priced like a t-shirt.
