As the final looks strode down the runway at Lanvin's Fall 2012 show, it was impossible not to swoon just a little bit at the wonderfully opulent jewels. The jewelry is part of the "Barbara" line from designer Alber Elbaz's 10-year anniversary collection, and it's named for the American billionaire Barbara Hutton, whose personal collection of fine jewelry was renowned for its grandeur. With baroque style having a major moment in fashion for Fall, this collection is one to grab — one statement necklace will elevate simple cocktail dresses, crewneck sweaters, even your basic white t-shirt to a whole new level of richness. It was all about the angles at the Michael Kors Spring 2013 runway show, as the designer presented a collection full of streamlined, sporty silhouettes done in a bold primary palette of yellow, kelly green, bright blue, and red. Show notes began with a reference to "geometric glamour" and ended with "architectural polish" — the first part seemed to draw upon '60s mod shapes, while the latter was an ode to '90s minimalism. The final trio of sexy black gowns would look fabulous on front row celebs like Camilla Belle and Katherine McPhee.
Let's talk positive: the Marc by Marc Jacobs show was about as upbeat as you get, with models in bright layers right up to their patterned turbans bouncing down the runway to the tune of "Can't You Feel It" by Time. What we love about Tory Burch is that she takes classic American style and gives it a jolt of exoticism with her bold colors and prints, and for Spring 2013 we saw that adventurous spirit again. There was no specific region in mind, as references ranged from tribal to Moroccan to downright preppy, but that seems to be quintessential Tory Burch: eccentric, curious, fun-loving, but always rooted in simple silhouettes like mom used to wear. That is, if your mom was super stylish and always put together. It was all about the embellishments: colorful, shiny beading, fringe, and crochet. They were juxtaposed with accessories that looked like travel souvenirs (in a good way), sensible traveling shoes, and rich colors. Tory fans will find lots to shop next season, from a beautifully-printed blue sundress, to bold separates that need only a tee-shirt to work well for the office. And can we talk about the hair for just a moment? Those wispy, prairie-girl gorgeous braids are a must-have.
Here's what we learned in five minutes at the Marc Jacobs Spring 2013 runway show: it will be the season to show your underthings; who needs pants when you're rocking an awesome tee; and the '60s live on, albeit with Jacobs's quirky edge. And yes, five minutes was exactly how long it took for all 45 looks to march out from a lacquered wall with panels that swung open to become mirrors. With all the Mad Hatter opulence of Jacobs's Fall '12 collection, Spring felt pared back and free, right down to the show notes that had the most minimal descriptions I've ever seen: "LOOK 1: T-SHIRT, SHORT." Big, bold stripes dominated the show, and were brilliantly highlighted in a sequined jumpsuit that will absolutely be in high demand for Spring editorials next season. While it was an ode to the '60s, there was nothing sentimental about the collection; it felt modern and even a little tough, but that may have been the models marching down the triangular runway with hands stiffly by their sides. And while on the subject of modernity, nothing felt more fresh than Jacobs's take on a ladylike skirtsuit, with jackets cropped to reveal midriffs (note: start Pilates stat) and skirts that hung on the lowest part of the hips. Some skirts were paired with sheer tops that revealed bras done by OnGossamer, further cementing the lingerie trend for next season.
In a total departure from her sexy, menswear-inspired Fall collection, Donna Karan went soft and ethereal for Spring 2013, showing a collection of draped dresses and softly tailored jackets in a gorgeous array of rosy pinks, mustard yellow, icy blue, and seafoam green. '90s grunge might be one thing we weren't expecting from Phillip Lim's Spring 2013 collection, which is why it was that much cooler. Everything you Generation X and Y'ers loved — all things plaid, slouchy pants and crop tops, denim — was "recut" by Lim to feel modern, a little bit rebellious, but taken in pieces, totally chic. Winning the totally chic test were his fitted moto jackets done in corded silk and pretty floral prints. DKNY Spring 2013 was all about the New Yorker's uniform, whether for sport, street, or work. The sporty theme has been a dominant one at Fashion Week thus far — and at DKNY it was expressed through mesh bodysuits, nylon anoraks, and baseball caps (baseball caps seem to be the hat for next season). Then there are uniforms of a different kind, like a perfect denim skirt with a white top, or a canvas and tweed car coat to be thrown over everything. It was all about updated basics you could wear all the time, from day to night, and who doesn't want that kind of versatility? Ashley Greene, the brand's recent ad campaign star, was in the front row and seemed to be especially excited by a denim-skirt-and-white-top combo, while Donna Karan took her bow in a bright yellow nylon anorak and her signature black bodysuit and black pants.
Derek Lam's Spring 2013 show started slowly, but by the time Joan Smalls closed the show in a burgundy laser-cut paillette dress, the collection was wide awake and full of energy. By the time a set of bright pencil skirts paired with perfectly slouched jersey pullovers had commanded their way down the runway, no doubt hundreds of editors had made mental notes of "things I must own." Lam has once again prescribed exactly we want to wear — easy sportswear with a twist. The collection started slow, with a cute, simple plaid dress in such a dowdy color only a model should wear it. The "black, sun, and fatigue" color continued for a few looks before things got interesting, notably the arrival of the perfect trench coat, followed shortly by a bright blue leather top and dress. And then things got really exciting: macramé done in ink, red ochre, tweed, and leather, rendered into textural skirts and dresses. The kicker was in one particularly killer look: easy jersey pullovers, some quilted, some sleeveless, paired with just about the coolest pencil skirts around — think gold leather, multicolored macramé, and bright laser-cut paillettes. This is the look that no doubt made a thousand mental notes — it was so effortlessly chic you can't help but want it in your closet.

Hot, hot, hot in so many ways: Prabal Gurung's Spring 2013 collection was unforgettable, and it wasn't just the sexy, flouncy dresses. The show was set inside an enormous warehouse with blacked-out windows, and unfortunately, no air circulation. On a surprisingly hot and muggy New York City day, this meant a lot of editors got an unexpected steam session. The lights finally went up, and out from the fog (a fog machine but no fans = unfortunate) came Joan Smalls, marching out in a cool white look that showcased the incredibly light possibilities of layering. Long sheer tops and dresses were worn over pants — a nod to Gurung's Nepalese roots. Even the cocktail dresses layered on wispy frills of ruffles and feathers that didn't weigh down the look; quite the opposite, these bouncy dresses were a highlight of the show. Kate Bosworth and Girls star Allison Williams sat rooted in the front, and Bosworth busily snapped pics of the looks as they went by — snapping photos of her future red-carpet looks, perhaps?
We loved Marissa Webb's work when she was head designer of J.Crew, which is why we couldn't wait to see her launch her eponymous line for Spring 2013. Leather, lace, and a strong opening walk by Carolyn Murphy made for a dramatic collection by Jason Wu, who played with the sexy/sweet balance for Spring 2013. Wu cited Helmut Newton's photographs as inspiration, which explains the presence of Murphy in her tight leather dress — she was a model in many of Newton's works. It was a collection about strong looks, where Wu juxtaposed the ultimate in femininity — lingerie-inspired pieces (and indeed, La Perla made the lingerie pieces for the collection) with tough leather and harnesses. It led to a theme of seduction versus innocence that will play well for cocktail parties next Spring.
Take extreme girliness, toss it with some rebellious elements, and what you get is Peter Som Spring 2013. Think feminine dressing with a playful wink — skirts had big asymmetric ruffles, delicate orchid-print shorts (note: these were part of a collaboration done with Earnest Sewn) were made oversized and slouchy, lace was turned into t-shirts, and a pretty pink dress had multiple straps that crisscrossed each other in an act of controlled chaos. The models sported colorful streaks of pink, blue, and green in their hair, giving more juice to the rebellious theme. Lingerie, a big trend emerging at New York Fashion Week, continued here in the form of '50s bustier tops. It was a vibrant show that started heavy on the floral prints, but halfway through the show leopard, graphic '60s prints, and lace bombed in, making for carefully mismatched outfits street stylers will love. It was a playful show that seemed perfectly attuned to young style setters like Hailee Steinfeld, who watched raptly from the front row.
