A recent top designer tip was to give your kitchen personality. A lovely idea and well done here with the stars, red accents, and geometric patterns. If only I can come up with a similar theme that does well the kitchen of my rental house with medium brown units, dark green marble-effect countertops, yellow walls, and light bamboo floors. I love this retro look in the picture, but it clearly won't work in my happier rainbow kitchen. Anyone out there with great ideas for my color scheme?

Not many people grasp the concept of thinking outside the box, but architect Stephen Kanner did just that by designing a 14-unit building with odd windows in Koreatown, Los Angeles. Koreatown is a neighborhood where most apartment buildings swim in a sea of similarity. You would think a contemporary structure would be a welcoming enhancement, but to the contrary; some neighbors felt it didn't complement the area's other structures. One neighbor felt if the building was painted one solid color, such as gray, maybe then it would be more attractive. Read the full story at the LA Times.

I could not believe my eyes when I saw this house for sale in Texas. Built in 2005 and nearly 20,000 square feet, it must be the finest Moroccan-style house outside of Morocco! Considering that the house has only 8 bedrooms, the rooms are pretty huge too. I have seen before some rather special houses in Texas and just wonder what is so special about that area. The asking price feels almost cheap compared to what the prices are in California, as $8.9 million certainly gives you a lot of square footage in the main house, a couple of guest houses in 3.8 acres, and the reassurance that there is no other similar house in the whole country!
Personally this house would be a bit over-the-top for me, but I do love the hallway and the carved door in the last photo; it looks simpler and more classic. I have actually seen something similar recently in England in a house that was for sale; it was a beautiful old home, and I could not believe there was a planning permission granted to demolish it!

When we bought the house of Anaïs, it really was because of the lovely garden and the image we had of what the house could become — despite the purple-painted ceilings, silver Chinese writings on the wall, mint-green and peach toilets, all the excessive color contrasts and mismatches, and the dampish smell in the house. But it certainly took us some time to get to the lovely end result!
The upstairs loft area had two tiny bedrooms (one with a sink) and this mint-green toilet corner. We opened the space up into one spacious room, insulated it well, and added a new bathroom with a walk-in shower. I don't normally go for carpets since we have asthma in the family, but here I chose natural seagrass covering for the whole bedroom.

I feel a bit weird showing everybody my bedroom, but oh well, here it is. This room used to be two rooms: a small kitchen and a bedroom. We combined the two to make a decent sized bedroom for ourselves. As with the office, we stripped back the vinyl floors to reveal wood floors and then painted everything from floor to ceiling white to maximize the light. It's so bright, airy and calming all at the same time. Our last bedroom, with its oak floors and dark painted walls, felt cave-like in comparison. If I could have my way, I would paint every room in our house white. Sadly though the kids are insisting on color in their rooms. We'll see...

Katie Couric's house is decorated with her favorite colors, blue and white, and it is very soft and romantic. As the house is in Hamptons, there are also some nice seaside-themed accessories on display. One can spot shells, shell-encrusted mirrors, and hurricane candleholders — what a delightful home!

This dining room is such a great example of how to do the classic '50s style with some unusual and eclectic accessories. The room itself is just a great shell — a contrast of cream walls and stained-looking lacquered floorboards could accommodate pretty much any style. Fresh and inspiring indeed!

Would you be staying in this balancing barn knowing that half of the house is hanging without visible support? Although the drop is small rather than hundreds of feet over a canyon, I still find the idea a bit scary.
The house itself is special for sure. Designed by Dutch architect Winy Maas, it is built hanging, like many houses in The Netherlands, over the water due to lack of space. The structure looks a bit like a barn, but a very special one, as this one has a metallic exterior. The location, surrounded by green rolling pastures and the sea, is also nice.
Balancing barn belongs to Living Architecture, an organization which supports modern architecture, and can be rented out. They also have other modern rental properties scattered around England.

What do you think about this transformation of a Swedish house? From drab to fab, I would say!
This house was before a mustard-colored box with no defined floors in its façade and tiny windows. The after state gives a promise of country romance with its larger paned windows and that grand entrance with double doors and mansion-like columns. There are also those lovely side additions of covered porches on both sides. I would declare this transformation as a total success!

SHH, a London-based architectural practice and design consultancy decorated this amazing six-floor Kensington House in London with the lead of René Dekker, their head of residential interiors. What an interior — I can spot moonlights, Moooi Raimond lamp-styled starlights, transparent furniture, and a gold-and-white-themed pool. The main areas seem to reflect more white and neutral tones, whereas the bedrooms have plenty of colorful splashes using what looks likes Pantone's colors of the year for 2010 and 2011 (turquoise and honeysuckle) and very Missoni-looking rugs and cushions.

Last year, I planted my very first vegetable garden too late in the season and was partially impressed. I planted carrots, peas, string beans, okra, broccoli, cabbage, lettuce and herbs.
What did manage to grow was quite impressive. However, I was afraid to eat it because I wasn't sure if it was safe (me = beginner). I have since learned that I live in Zone 5 and that I planted an "organic garden." I'd love to do it again so I'm on top of it early this year.
I've already found an awesome website. I'll be sure to share any future good ideas, advice, sources, etc. that I collect along my journey. Thanks for stopping by!
