Max Mara Fall 2013

Max Mara Review | Fashion Week Fall 2013

Comfort and warmth seemed to be the bywords at Laura Lusuardi's Fall 2013 show for Max Mara, which opened on Thursday with a series of looks layered underneath voluminous, cuddly outerwear.

Lusuardi stuck to a well-edited color palette of camel, brown, mustard, gray, and black for this outing, and put extra focus on round-shouldered coats and jackets. Blazers and topcoats with pushed-up sleeves sat on top of oversize cardigans, wide-leg trousers, or silk windbreakers. (For added ease of movement, the models all wore sneakers made from suede and python.) Just a few pieces of knitwear, like a brown sweater with fur sleeves and a yellow-and-brown striped dress with leather accents on the shoulders, made it down the runway exposed to the open air, but by and large, the coat reigned supreme here. It's an emphasis that makes sense: Max Mara's outerwear is among its bestselling categories. But this show was as much about ease and pleasure as it was about commerce.

Love It or Leave It? Colorful Fauxhawks on the Fendi Fall 2013 Runway

From the dark lipstick to the fauxhawks atop the models' heads, Fendi went punk for Fall 2013.

From the dark lipstick to the fauxhawks atop the models' heads, Fendi went punk for Fall 2013. The collection featured fur on everything — from coats to handbags and more. The beauty look followed suit with a furry fauxhawk mounted on top of a french braid to create a punk silhouette. What's your take on this hair-raising look?

Fendi

Fendi Fall 2013

Things have gotten more than a little hairy at Fendi.
Fendi Review | Fashion Week Fall 2013

Things have gotten more than a little hairy at Fendi. Karl Lagerfeld's Fall 2013 collection for the house, which he named Icons Unchained, seemed like a not-so-subtle commentary on the conspicuous reemergence of fur in luxury collections.

There were animal pelts all over this offering, including coats cut from stripes of alternating natural furs and hides dyed with neon colors, as well as booties, pencil skirts, scarves, and the house's Selleria handbags. There were even sunglasses whose stems were covered in fur, and all the models came down the runway with fox fur woven into french braids to create the effect of colorful mohawks.

As for the icons Lagerfeld was referring to, well, what's more iconic than opulence itself?

Fendi Fall 2013 Runway

The mantra at the Fendi Fall 2013 collection?

The mantra at the Fendi Fall 2013 collection? Fur — in every shade — on everything, and we mean everything. Even the shoes, bags, sunglasses, and tough-girl mohawks were adorned with it. Karl Lagerfeld zeroed in on fur (a pointed nod to the house's heritage), sleek lines, sexy slits, and enough neon and tactile intrigue to convince us of this collection's '80s-punk-meets-tribal leanings. But don't be fooled, this Nu-rave-esque lineup is also impeccably tailored, and the clothes, while bold in effect, are crafted with the utmost ladylike sensibility. Take, for example, the car coats styled with knee-length pencil skirts, or the cool cropped jackets paired with chic high-neck sheaths. There's an undeniable edge to the Fendi Fall '13 girl, but with a little (or a lot) of color and a clean silhouette, she's not as unapproachable as meets the eye.

Alberta Ferretti Fall 2013

Don't be fooled by the first few looks from Alberta Ferretti's Fall 2013 collection.

Don't be fooled by the first few looks from Alberta Ferretti's Fall 2013 collection. Her show in Milan on Wednesday may have started off with a series of looks in black and white, but they were anything but basic. She used a subtler hand with the embroidery and embellishments she usually employs, making this collection a little softer than her past few offerings. Still, the classic Ferretti details were all there: a black skirt was decorated with lace and sparkly black beads, while embroidered flowers snaked up the front of more than one coat in a blue check. There was romance here, but in a way that felt controlled, demure, and even a little fragile.

A Lesson in the Loveliest Kind of Dressing From Alberta Ferretti Fall '13

A striking palette, delivered with Alberta Ferretti's feminine touch, makes for a Fall 2013 collection that's both a little punchy, and at its core, absolutely lovely.

A striking palette, delivered with Alberta Ferretti's feminine touch, makes for a Fall 2013 collection that's both a little punchy, and at its core, absolutely lovely. Ferretti's signature handiwork is all at play here — the intricacies that make her gowns truly about the details — like the sheer, embellished bodices, beaded waists and necklines, and ruffled hemlines. There are a few sharper looks in the mix — black-and-white paneled gowns that feel more modern than the rest — ones we hope to see on the likes of British beauty Michelle Dockery; but mostly the lineup hints more at vintage-feeling glamour, with evening gowns better-suited for her Downton Abbey alter ego.

Gucci Fall 2013

Gucci's woman for Fall 2013 is strong, powerful, confident — and a little dangerous to boot.

Gucci's woman for Fall 2013 is strong, powerful, confident — and a little dangerous to boot. The brand's pregnant creative director Frida Giannini took ladylike shapes and subverted them with hard-edged, forthrightly sexy materials and styling. This offering had no shortage of pieces cut from patent or python, but a simple suit in plain black leather, nipped in at the waist, made perhaps one of the strongest statements of the show. Elsewhere, scaled-up houndstooth prints made for an interesting use of pattern, while sheer panels and plunging necklines exposed daring amounts of skin. The evening gowns, most of them dark, were accented with attention-getting swirls of feathers and fringe. Altogether, it's a look that requires discipline and serious backbone — but it's nothing the Gucci woman can't handle.

Gucci Fall 2013 Runway

Who says being ladylike can't be utterly sexy, too?
Gucci Runway | Fashion Week Fall 2013 Photos

Who says being ladylike can't be utterly sexy, too? Not any showgoer at the Gucci Fall '13 collection this morning in Milan. An exaggerated graphic houndstooth print provided the foundation for a cheekier kind of midi-length office uniform, while pencil-skirt suits featured vampy V-neck dips, thigh-high slits, and dark reptilian finishes. Of course, it was the eveningwear that left us wanting more, a true mark of designer Frida Giannini's work at hand. Silky black, mauve, and signature Gucci green floor-length gowns — and jumpsuits — were punctuated with sheer fishnet, feathers, and fringe-embellished bodices, offering up a look both seductive and exotic. Our bet's on Emma Stone laying claim to one of these creations first, and we hope we're right.
