Fab Finding Follow Up: Retro Glam It Up

Last week a reader wrote me saying she bought these fierce Betsey Johnson Avril beaded peep toe pumps, $229.99, and needed help putting together a 'retro glam' outfit.

Last week a reader wrote me saying she bought these fierce Betsey Johnson Avril beaded peep toe pumps, $229.99, and needed help putting together a 'retro glam' outfit. She is heading to Miami for a wild escape with the girls in a couple of weeks. I said: think Studio 54 meets David Bowie.

I asked you all to go Fab Finding to put together a 'retro glam' outfit. A couple of you thought this was a challenging one - good! - so let's see what you all came up with. To see all the retro glam finds click here.

Look #1, found by zeldaf is damn sexy with this Development One Sided Shoulder Tunic with Scallop Strap.

Betsey Johnson

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2007: Betsey Johnson

I know lots of you are Betsey Johnson fans, as am I, and she showed the world a more reserved collection for Fall 2007.

I know lots of you are Betsey Johnson fans, as am I, and she showed the world a more reserved collection for Fall 2007. Still packed with ruffled, lacey party dresses, there was definitely more grown up pieces than usual. This is not a bad thing, just different.

As expected, there was a rainbow of colors, not expected, they were all toned down. Cream, navy, emerald green, and brown came up in smart day pieces while red, black and teal were more evening. A few really cute prints: a graphic blue and yellow pattern, grey and black plaid, a fruit stripe gum print and an adorable black and tan heart print. There were definite 80s influences - strapless puffed short dresses - and 70s influences - colorful knits and wide brim hats.

I could definitely see Chloe Sevigny in the long sleeved cream and black lace belted onesie. On the other end of the spectrum, I could see Charlize Theron in the floor length, flowy silk stargazer ruffled gown.

Here's what she put together:

Cover Girl

Beauty Byte: Cover Girl is Looking for a New Queen

Last week, Queen Latifah and Cover Girl held an open casting call to try and find a new woman to take over the throne.

Last week, Queen Latifah and Cover Girl held an open casting call to try and find a new woman to take over the throne. Instead of hiring another star or model, Cover Girl would like The Queen's replacement to be someone real.

Over 2,000 women showed up to the event held at B.B. King's in NYC's Times Square. Whoever is chosen will appear in the new ad campaign due out in June.

The contestants had 30 seconds to describe why they should be the makeup line's new face and to share how they have achieved both inner and outer beauty through overcoming an obstacle, an accomplishment, their involvement in the community, or standing up for something they were passionate about.

Trend Alert: Railroad Stripes

All aboard for this new denim trend.

All aboard for this new denim trend. Railroad stripes are youthful, utilitarian and fresh. I have a pair of cropped jeans I've had for years, by Dickies, and I still wear them. They have a great, comfy worn feel to them and I love them with bold colors like red, yellow, and emerald green. These have a definite nautical vibe too. Check out a few of my finds:

Derek Lam

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2007: Derek Lam

Derek Lam delivered what might be my favorite collection yet!

Derek Lam delivered what might be my favorite collection yet! Architectural and modern yet sexy, this Fall I may have to invest in one of his pieces.

With strong emphasis on the shoulders, the bust and the waist, there was a definite Azzedine Alaïa influence. But it was definitely American sportswear with knit sweaters, boxy coats and sporty touches like zippers, tank tops, color blocking and bold seams. The one shoulder made a couple of appearances; it was refreshing to see it on youthful short, flirty dresses. There was also a Grecian influence, with modern draping. The palette was subdued - putty, navy and black ruled, and a super cute periwinkle plaid brightened things up. A couple of long dresses even managed to pass for day wear - a challenging task. Metallics did pop up, but not blindingly so.

My favorite look: this belted shearling vest dress. Modern and so interesting!

Beauty Mark It! A New Hairdryer

About three years ago, I bought the Solano Top Power 3200 Hairdryer.

About three years ago, I bought the Solano Top Power 3200 Hairdryer. I really loved it, but just recently it went kerplunk. I've got a back up to hold me over, but I could really use your help finding a new one with the following criteria:

  • My hair gets frizzy so I need a hair dryer with a narrow nozzle attachment.
  • I like it to have a high wattage so that it doesn't take me forever to dry my medium-long length hair.
  • I love the cool shot feature. It's an essential if you want to set your hair in different styles.
  • It has to be lightweight since I travel frequently.

Let's all go beauty marking to find a new fabulous hairdryer! Be sure to come back and tell me when your Beauty Marks are up, or just tag your choices with new hairdryer. To learn what a Beauty Mark is and how to make one, click here.

Luca Luca

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2007: Luca Luca Beauty

Behind the scenes at the Fall 2007 Luca Luca show was every bit as glamorous as you would have imagined.

Behind the scenes at the Fall 2007 Luca Luca show was every bit as glamorous as you would have imagined. Gorgeous, flawless looking models sat and waited their turn as makeup artists, lead by Tom Pecheaux, perfected smokey eyes and hair stylist, Teddy Charles, coiffed and curled.

The clothing was lined neatly in racks and the red carpet area had a white and silver Luca Luca backdrop. Unfortunately the photo area was packed inside since it was a mere 9 degrees on this frigid New York day. Although cramped, photographers didn't skip a beat as Carmen Electra, Kimora Lee Simmons, Lauren Conrad, Bobbi Thomas, Kelly Rowland, JC Chasez and many more made their fashionably late entrances.

Lucky for me, I had the opportunity to speak with both hair and makeup about their looks for the show. Teddy explained that he and Luca wanted to do something to up-sweep the models hair and keep it off of their necks to show off the details in the clothing. He also felt that sweeping the hair upwards shows off their faces.

He began this updo with hair that had been washed the day before. He started with a low ponytail and didn't pull it completely through - in essence he made a loop.

With the remainder of hair that was poking out, he used a Tourmaline T3 Ionic Wet/Dry Iron to create waves. Then he set hair with a touch of Kerastase Resistance Double Force Hair Spray. Each model only took about 20 minutes.
