Designer Spotlight

Designer Spotlight: Martin Margiela

Undoubtedly, you've heard the name Martin Margiela.

Undoubtedly, you've heard the name Martin Margiela. The Belgian designer has been a figure in the fashion world since 1985, when he started working for Jean Paul Gaultier. Prior to that, Margiela had worked as a freelance designer for five years after graduating Antwerp's Royal Academy of Fine Arts.

Just a year after leaving Gaultier, the designer showed the first collection under his own label. And the rest is history. Currently, Margiela has a boutique in the West Village in NYC; his shoes are also sold at Barneys. His clothing can also be found at online boutiques such as Yoox and La Garconne.

Side note: Balenciaga's main man, Nicolas Ghesquiere has said on many occasions that he wears Martin Margiela. In the fashion world, that is quite the compliment!

Fabworthy: Lyell Pinwheel Burgundy Camisole

As you know, I am print-shy.

As you know, I am print-shy. But when a print is subdued and hard to read, it rocks my world.

I am in lust with this Lyell Pinwheel Burgundy Camisole, on sale for $100 (originally $165) for that precise reason. The pinwheels are so small, you can barely identify them unless you're up close. And the triple tier detailing at the bodice makes an otherwise-boring cami extremely girly. I also love the seriously thin straps that look like they're about to, sexily, fall off the shoulders.

Ah, don't you love how something so simple can rouse you sometimes? Gotta love fashion!

Celebrity Style: Katharine McPhee

Katharine McPhee looks ultra feminine, especially standing against that colorful graffiti wall at Fuse Studios in New York City.

Katharine McPhee looks ultra feminine, especially standing against that colorful graffiti wall at Fuse Studios in New York City. Her chain halter dress is very chic. I only wish she had pulled some of her hair back so we could see her slender shoulders. And way to go showing off those stems, Katharine. Hint, hint, Jessica Alba.

Fab Ad: Jean Paul Gaultier Fall/Winter 2007

I have to say, these ads are pretty intense.

I have to say, these ads are pretty intense. Believe it or not, that's Gemma Ward under there. I'm not sure how I feel about the muzzle-like knit on her face - I'm sure it has some underlying meaning, but I don't like the symbolism of a woman being muzzled. Especially because I'm not sure what it has to do with the collection's theme: the Scottish highlands. The clothes on the other hand - you know I am loving plaids right now and Gaultier continues to be a mastermind in that department. What do you all think?!

The ads were shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, and more from this campaign can be seen here.
