Fab Read: Fresh Fruits

Never been to Tokyo?

Never been to Tokyo? Nevermind! Buy Fresh Fruits by Shoichi Aoki, $20, and you'll get a VIP pass to see the craziest street wear from all the coolest cats in the city. The photos are a collection of teen street fashion portraits selected from Japan's most famous street fanzine of the same name.

The featured kids, aged 12 through 18, wear a combination of high and low fashion, their favorite being Vivienne Westwood! And don't worry if you don't speak Japanese; the book includes translations of the captions that tell of the subject's name, age and clothing.

Buyer beware: as the cover indicates, the fashion in this book tends to get crazy so purchase at your own risk!

Designer Spotlight

Designer Spotlight: By Francine

"I really wanted to create a designer collection that is well priced.

"I really wanted to create a designer collection that is well priced. Quality fashion should not be unaffordable," says By Francine designer and founder Francine Simmons. Amen to that, sister!

Francine started sewing her own clothes when she was 12, so needless to say she's had plenty of time to get her head on straight. That's why her collection is practical and pretty. She refuses to think that clothes can only be seasonal, and aspires to create timeless pieces, both vintage and modern: clothes that can be worn again and again, no matter what time of year.

And you know? I think she might have it down.

By Francine is available at Maneater Threads for $160-$260. For more information, try contacting the collection's showroom!

Back to Cool: The Worldly Scholar

Even though I am well into my working years, I still get the back to school feeling around now.

Even though I am well into my working years, I still get the back to school feeling around now. I just loved the anticipation of another year of school - who knew what was in store?! Also, I always looked forward to back to school shopping excursions, of course. Even if it was just school supplies, it was fun fun fun. For those of you who are getting ready for school days, I thought it would be fun to inspire some new, fresh looks for you based on my favorites from the Fall collections. With these looks, you'll no doubt be back to cool...

Enter the worldly scholar, based on Balenciaga's unique global chic collection. The mix of khakis, ethnic touches and a tailored blazer brags: I was traveling the world this Summer and I'm a force to be reckoned with. The perfect book bag? Why this red Marc by Marc Jacobs bag that is up for grabs! Jodhpurs and fur optional, attitude required.

Love It or Hate It

Chloe Swing Drop Orange Mini Dress: Love It or Hate It?

I first saw this Chloe Swing Drop Mini Dress, $2,280, on model Anja Rubik in Chloe's Fall ads.

I first saw this Chloe Swing Drop Mini Dress, $2,280, on model Anja Rubik in Chloe's Fall ads. I loved it so much, I set the ad as my computer desktop background. Looking at it here, though, the quality of the dress is not as rich; it appears brighter and has more sheen and life in the ads. Still, I do admire the asymmetrical pleating. What about you?

Celebrity Style: Mandy Moore

Mandy Moore looked very au natural at the Mercedes-Benz Bridgehampton Polo Challenge in Long Island over the weekend.

Mandy Moore looked very au natural at the Mercedes-Benz Bridgehampton Polo Challenge in Long Island over the weekend. Her gold knit dress is flattering but I'm glad she chose to pair it with those white sassy wedge sandals! Without them, the ensemble would be quite snooze-worthy. She tops it all off with some chunky jewels...she's literally golden!

Come Fab Finding With Me: Moving to Beach Town, USA

A big congratulations is in order for a fellow reader...she just bought her dream house: a lovely beach cottage!

A big congratulations is in order for a fellow reader...she just bought her dream house: a lovely beach cottage! Makes me think of that amazing house in the Hamptons Diane Keaton's character had in the film Something's Gotta Give - that house was amazing.

She currently lives in a "super status-conscious 'burb" and her "typical uniform" consists of a "twin set, good bag, and kitten heels." Blahs-ville. Since she's moving to a more relaxed area, she's ready to let her hair down - but at the same time, she's "not a girl that lives in jeans and flip flops."

Help her prepare for her newfound lifestyle. I'll start you off with this pretty J. Crew Scrolled-link Bracelet, $68; it's both luxurious and laid back. Let's all go Fab Finding for an outfit that will make her beachy keen. Come back and tell me when your Fab Finds are up and tag them with beach babe.

Oh! Now, you can build outfits by creating a list of clothing items. We have everything you need to build outfits with and you can use your Fab Find bookmarks too. This is an even better way to put together an entire outfit when you are completing your Fab Finding missions.

Fab Flash: Topshop Clothes Made By 'Slave Labor'?

The Sunday Times reported yesterday that Sir Philip Green, who owns Topshop, TopMan, Miss Selfridge, and other British retail conglomerates, paid Asian factory workers less than $8 to make clothes for Green's stores, including the Kate Moss for Topshop collection.

The Sunday Times reported yesterday that Sir Philip Green, who owns Topshop, TopMan, Miss Selfridge, and other British retail conglomerates, paid Asian factory workers less than $8 to make clothes for Green's stores, including the Kate Moss for Topshop collection.

The hundreds of Sri Lankan, Indian, and Bangladeshi workers are employed in a factory in Mauritius, where they work for up to 12 hours per day, six days a week. Workers told The Times that they were recruited in their home countries and promised wages up to five times what they actually received; they also paid up to $1,425 to be guaranteed a job. Once at the factory in Mauritius, however, they receive approximately 44 cents to 81 cents an hour - about 40% below the local average wage. The wages have also been found to be set according to race, with those from Bangladesh being paid substantially less than Sri Lankans.

As for Green's response? He said that he was treating the allegations seriously and would investigate: "You are telling me that factories are happy to breach our code of conduct. I've got to look into it." Yes, Sir, I think you do.

Look of the Day

Look of the Day: Swirl Girl

I don't think I can ever get bored of little summer dresses with mesmerizing patterns.

I don't think I can ever get bored of little summer dresses with mesmerizing patterns. Take rothchild here: she's a swirl girl with that dress of hers: perfectly summery, breezy, and beautiful. Plus, she used my favorite quintessential summer shoe to finish the look: a white espadrille.

Here's what she has on:

  • Dress: Nordstrom
  • Shoes: Etienne Aigner
  • Necklace: Gift

Congrats to rothchild!
