New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Mara Hoffman

Prints were alive and well on the Mara Hoffman Fall runway, but they weren't the recent floral patterns seen everywhere.

Prints were alive and well on the Mara Hoffman Fall runway, but they weren't the recent floral patterns seen everywhere.

Eclectic prints found themselves on long turtleneck dresses, sheer tie-front blouses, flowy frocks, and belted sweaters. On the less-bold end of the spectrum were the solids: tuxedo jumpers, satin skinny pants, and long vests. Whether you're a prints or solid girl, there's something to strike your fancy. There was a slight desert warfare feel with the accessories and music: beanie-cum-shawl pieces, aviators and leather gloves toughened the catwalk.

Tote Swag

Fashion Week is always more mellow on weekend days.

Fashion Week is always more mellow on weekend days. It's easier to catch a cab, there's no rush hour and a (semi) laid back feel is in the air. Maybe that's what compelled three designers to give away handy tote bags at the shows. The "I Heart Shoes" one is by Payless and was gifted at the Abaete show, the middle one is a beautiful Brazilian beach scene a la Alexandre Herchcovitch and the right one is a cool rain print that was prevalent in Mara Hoffman's collection. I was pretty psyched to have collected three cool totes in one day as I'm totally a tote girl — always carrying reading materials with me. Can you guess which one is my favorite?!

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Catherine Holstein The last stop of the night yesterday was the Thom Bar at the Thompson hotel for Catherine Holstein's fall '08 presentation. After a quick shared coconut soup and rice (yum!) at Kittichai with a fellow editor, I went upstairs and entered the little bar space where models were looking insouciant and lovely--all because of the librarian-chic (with a hipster edge), playful designs of the gorge Ms. Holstein.

Valentino bid his final adieu to the fashion world at his Spring Couture show in Paris last week. "This environment is no longer stimulating. I certainly won't miss the fashion world. It's ruined! Everybody's doing the same things. What's missing is challenge, creativity, cheerfulness. These days it's all about numbers! To continue working in an environment which says nothing in particular to me would be a bore," he said. I'm sure Val won't be anywhere near bored on his upcoming travels to Brazil, Russia, and Switzerland.

FABTV: De La Soul "Roller Skating Jam"

If you've been searching your whole life for a song to roller skate too, find salvation in De La Soul's tribute to the retro sport on wheels.

If you've been searching your whole life for a song to roller skate too, find salvation in De La Soul's tribute to the retro sport on wheels. Personally, I hate roller skating. Ok, ok, it's because I suck at it. But I'll take roller skating over ice skating because I have a morbid fear of falling on ice. Anywho, this jam has everything you need to get pumped for a good roller adventure: folks having fun, bright early '90s hip-hop style, and an all-around happy vibe — not to mention some fierce roller moves. I'll stay on the sidelines, but I always love me some fun-loving De La Soul.

P.S. I'm one of those roller snobs who thinks that wheels are way cooler than blades. But if you blade, check out Fit's bits all about it.

Anne Hathaway

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Erin Fetherston

With a mixed celebrity audience: Anne Hathaway, boyfriend Raffaello Follieri, Gossip Girl Taylor Momsen, Rachel Zoe, and model Irina Lazareanu, Erin Fetherston tread into new waters.

The It designer, who in recent seasons has sent monochrome hippie nightgown-cum-dresses and ruffled girly-girl skirts down the runway in a palette of white, ivory, and shades of grey, added color . . . and even bold prints into the mix.

The feel was contemporary and everyday wearable — don't get me wrong, her trademark flowy gowns and floral head trimmings were still there, in numbers — but there were also tailored blazers, little everyday dresses and tunics.

I wonder if her recent line for Target has anything to do with the change?
