Carolina Herrera

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Carolina Herrera

Today was a good day for a ride in the countryside .

Today was a good day for a ride in the countryside . . . for Carolina Herrera. While Ralph Lauren has equestrian chic down pat, Herrera is giving him a run for his money.

Colors were borrowed from a fall landscape: oatmeal brown, China blue, lemon drop yellow and russet red. Masculine tweeds are layered over chiffon print shirts, vests and riding pants. There wasn't much in the evening category; Herrera opted to create dramatic daywear instead. And succeed she did. Opulent materials like fur and feather were omnipresent — the long feathers that stemmed from the dramatic fedoras had a life all their own. Puffy eyed models (late night girls?) also donned plaids, brocade and corduroy.

Cape? Check. Riding gloves? Check. Whip? Check!

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Oscar de la Renta

As always, Oscar was all sophistication and elegance.

As always, Oscar was all sophistication and elegance. The models trotted out to a live performance by Regina Spektor, who crooned and played a grand piano in the background. Full taffeta and tulle skirts swished by, ornately embellished — all with grandeur.

At times, the checkerboard tweed overcoats, shimmering skirt suits, and vivid silks were so beautiful I found myself subconsciously holding my breath. Fuzzy fur toques, beaded shearling vests, and rich jewel colors hinted at a Russian influence. Oodles of dresses for all occasions, Oscar's specialty, were present: day, cocktail, and gown. They all had one thing in common — the appearance of decadence. Ultimately, that's what Oscar is all about . . . a classic decadence.

Fab Flash: Jovovich-Hawk Collection for Target

Last fall I was excited to hear that Jovovich-Hawk was going to create a collection for the Target Go line come Spring.

Last fall I was excited to hear that Jovovich-Hawk was going to create a collection for the Target Go line come Spring. I knew the label's designers, models Milla Jovovich and Carmen Hawk, would deliver their quintessential, vintage-inspired pieces at a price I could afford. Well, the wait is almost over! The line, scheduled to hit stores on March 2, definitely delivers its promise of iconic Jovovich-Hawk looks, however some of them are looking a little too Sienna Miller circa 2005 for my taste. Oh, and be sure to check out the backstage beauties at the Jovovich-Hawk Fall '08 show!

Celebrity Style: Amy Smart

Actress Amy Smart attended Diane von Furstenberg's Fall '08 show in the designer's turquoise and black Tai dress.

Actress Amy Smart attended Diane von Furstenberg's Fall '08 show in the designer's turquoise and black Tai dress. She looks fashionable and sleek, just the way a front-row star ought to. I adore the geometric accent! Although that color is not yet available online, I figured you'd also like the other version considering you have black and white on your minds.

Diane Von Furstenberg

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Diane von Furstenberg

Leave it to Diane von Furstenberg to create a foreign affair, where the muse is a sophisticate who wanders Berlin's dark streets, meets a handsome stranger, and then flees to Shanghai the next morning.

Leave it to Diane von Furstenberg to create a foreign affair, where the muse is a sophisticate who wanders Berlin's dark streets, meets a handsome stranger, and then flees to Shanghai the next morning. Her wardrobe is what she picks up along the way; a collection of beaded dresses, ruffly blouses, wide legged pants, tailored jackets and military-inspired outerwear. Don't forget her little Bugle Boy hat.

The real stunners in this collection were not DVF's always-fantastic dresses. Maybe those dresses were great but we couldn't really see them since they were hidden and belted under Glenn plaid blazers, herringbone coats, chunky cashmere cardigans and peplum jackets. As one who is pretty satisfied with my outerwear, Diane has forced me to reconsider.
