Glitterati: Akawelle

Lots of jewelry has stories behind them, but few have one as inspiring as the Akawelle necklace ($75).

Lots of jewelry has stories behind them, but few have one as inspiring as the Akawelle necklace ($75).

When the designer, Lovetta Conto, was only four years old, she and her father fled to a refugee camp from their native Liberia, which was embroiled in a series of brutal civil wars. Now fifteen, Lovetta is the first person to be awarded a Strongheart Fellowship, which aims to create educational and leadership opportunities for young people enduring extreme hardship.

As part of her fellowship, she created the Akawelle necklace. Each one features a leaf charm with LIFE imprinted on it, along with the metal casing of an actual spent bullet from the civil war. "Even after something as terrible as war, new life can begin," Lovetta says of the design. A portion of proceeds benefit Strongheart House, a home and school for other Fellows that will open later this year. Something chic for a good cause? Count me in.

Fall Glimpse: Neck Fest

If Spring dabbled in statement necklaces, Fall was a full-on neck fest.

If Spring dabbled in statement necklaces, Fall was a full-on neck fest. Nay a dainty necklace here, a dainty necklace there; yay layers of chunky chains (Givenchy), costumey rhinestones (Balenciaga), jagged Swarovski crystals (Burberry), mixed media (Lanvin), and antique Indian masterpieces (McQueen).

The most innovative was perhaps Dries Van Noten (left), who fashioned his super-colorful, and no doubt super-heavy, neck pieces out of other jewelry items: ethnic bangles. Add a fur collar atop a stellar collection, and this neck fest would make any vampire pounce.

Sneak Peek! Dean Harris For Target

Who's down for some fun jewels?

Who's down for some fun jewels? The Dean Harris for Target collection, true to his style, fuses sterling silver, gold, and precious stones into organic and chic adornments. The collection combines a nice offering of modern pieces like the chain-linked bracelet to classic, layer-friendly necklaces. There are also a couple funky items for all you hipsters. I'm crushing on the twisted sterling silver ring and this cute ethereal necklace. These baubles will hit select stores and be online August 17; prices range from $20 to $100 — not bad for Dean Harris, eh?

Transformation — Rihanna
Rihanna is no cookie-cutter R&B diva. When she released her first album, Music of the Sun, her record label decked her out in long wavy extensions and frilly outfits. "At the time I was, like, 'OK, I'll do whatever you want me to do.' But I love doing edgier things," she told In Style. "So I had to grow up and figure myself out."

Which Estée Lauder Beauty Is Most Fab?

So what if the majority of July's Bazaar contains multiple images of Hilary Rhoda, Gwyneth Paltrow, Elizabeth Hurley, and Caroline Murphy?

So what if the majority of July's Bazaar contains multiple images of Hilary Rhoda, Gwyneth Paltrow, Elizabeth Hurley, and Caroline Murphy? I like them all. They are all great beauties in their own right and I thought Estée Lauder was promoted with class. Speaking of, the spokesladies were at Bloomingdale's last night to promote the new fragrance Sensuous. They must have coordinated with their individual, but complementary, frocks and black sandals. Once again, they all look great. But my eye goes to one Lauder lady in particular (guess who!). Who's your fave?

Resort 2009: Gucci

Did you by any chance watch Gucci's 2009 Resort collection, held at Villa Aurelia in Rome, via live webcast?

Did you by any chance watch Gucci's 2009 Resort collection, held at Villa Aurelia in Rome, via live webcast? If not, I'm here as your eyes for the show, which celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Gucci store in Rome.

So what does one serve up for a 70th anniversary? Nothing but grandness all around. Parts of it were very Gucci – slick, sexy — but it also incorporated a glamorous bohemian style with long, flowy maxi dresses, each with a unique print. Striped pants, leather jackets, pleated mini dresses, and some hints of nautical also saw their time on the catwalk. While ultragirlie maxi dresses painted a very feminine picture, in contrast, crisp trousers demanded a mannish power; this incorporation of two extremes is becoming quite common in fashion. And why not? It's set to appeal to all types of customers. Brava!

Fab Flash: Would You Miss Steve and Barry's?

UPDATE: Steve & Barry's have officially went under and has filed a voluntary Chapter 11 petition in Manhattan bankruptcy court.

UPDATE: Steve & Barry's have officially went under and has filed a voluntary Chapter 11 petition in Manhattan bankruptcy court.

Tear. Mega retail chain Steve and Barry's is headed toward major financial downturn. The 28-year-old clothing chain who recently gained popularity for carrying celebrity sportswear lines — most notably, Bitten by Sarah Jessica Parker — at rock-bottom prices has filed for bankruptcy protection.

Steve and Barry's is set to shut down a large number of its 270 stores and will most likely be forced to liquidate all assets. So how does SJP feel about this failed venture? “We are surprised and disappointed that this situation has developed. We are surprised because our understanding, based on the accounting statements we see, was that sales have been very, very strong” said Sarah Jessica Parker's lawyer, Ira Schreck.

Let's not lose hope too soon. The company is looking for an acquisition; Sears and Kmart have showed interest, with the possibility of continuing a partnership with its licensed celebrity lines. Would you miss Steve and Barry's?

Celebrity Style: Elizabeth Hurley

Isn't Elizabeth Hurley the perfect poster child for Summer?

Isn't Elizabeth Hurley the perfect poster child for Summer? The model was out and about in NYC wearing a bright yellow Catherine Malandrino top (on sale) and white jeans. Ahh, as refreshing as a cold lemonade on a scorching day. Liz also brought with her a tan bag and brown sunglasses to add some depth to the look. Oh, and check out that enormous wedding ring!
