Oscar de la Renta Spring 2012

A sense of youthful fun pervaded Oscar de la Renta's Spring 2012 runway show.
Oscar de la Renta: Spring 2012 RTW

A sense of youthful fun pervaded Oscar de la Renta's Spring 2012 runway show. It was partly due to Justin Timberlake in the front row, the runway models' crimped hair, dewy skin, and sock-with-sandal styling, but it was mostly the clothes. Not driven so much by a theme as by a girl, a younger girl than de la Renta's traditional customer, who will be a little more playful with her choice of clothes. A feather-trimmed sequined shift, acid-green harem pants with a feathered crop top, and gathered taffeta ball-skirt gowns layered with lace cropped shirts were not for the faint of fashion heart; more staid were a series of easy chiffon shift dresses and wide-leg trousers and pussy-bow blouses. It's as if the almost-80-year-old designer were having a good long wink at the crowd, reminding us that you're never too old to have fun. It's a treat that his version of fun is so darn beautiful, too.

  • Trends: bold color, volume, asymmetry, crochet, feathers.
  • Colors: cobalt blue, white, pale pink, champagne, yellow floral print.
  • Key Piece:The taffeta ball gowns layered with cropped tops in lace and crochet.
  • Accessories: Strappy stilettos and open-toe booties in black and white from Manolo Blahnik.
  • Who Would Wear It: Certainly not Justin Timberlake, but we can't wait to see young starlets like Diane Kruger, Kate Bosworth, Rachel Bilson, and Olivia Palermo work de la Renta's jazzy, evening options on the red carpet.

Herve Leger by Max Azria Spring 2012

For Spring 2012, Max Azria showed his signature body-conscious silhouettes, this time re-imagined with textural intrigue and gorgeous tribal accents. Each model hit the runway in her curve-hugging, metallic-foil confection like a soldier — complete with militant-inspired gladiator boots to hint at something tougher, more fierce. While the bandage dress dominated, new textures — weaving, braiding, and fringe — gave way to something more tribal-inspired than Young Hollywood. Striking gold ribbing, metal quills, beads, and jacquard and basket weaving on black, nude, gold, silver tones countered leg-baring slits and cutouts, balancing strength with sex appeal in every look.

  • Trends: Metallics, fringe, cutouts, textural braiding and weaving.
  • Colors: White, black, gold, silver.
  • Key Look: White fringed dress with cutout bodice and metal ribbing.
  • Accessories: High-impact knee-high gladiator boots.
  • Who Would Wear It: The ultra-sexy and the very edgy, like Gisele Bundchen and Rihanna; front-rowers Jessica Szohr and Katie Cassidy.

    Runway Retrospective: Rodarte

Rodarte — I can't say the name without having images of fashion-forward dresses float before my eyes.
    Rodarte Runway | Pictures

Rodarte — I can't say the name without having images of fashion-forward dresses float before my eyes. Designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy have taken the concept of a gown and turned it upside down, in the best way possible. Their designs manage to be both ethereal and completely funky — and celebs eat them up! The sisters even created the Black Swan costumes, which were inspired by Edgar Degas's Little Dancer statue. Since Fall of 2006, Rodarte's ready-to-wear has gotten more and more sophisticated and elaborate. Click through to see their runway retrospective.
