Versace Spring 2012

Versace: Spring 2012

While most designers went tribal for Spring '12, Donatella Versace ventured under the sea. It was a leg-bearing collection as models sauntered down the runway — complete with big blowouts and dangerously high lucite heels — in an array of starfish, seashell, and seahorse printed short sets and minidresses. Sexy indeed, and when skin wasn't showing down below, Versace paired fitted pencil skirts with belly-baring bandeau and corset tops. Pastel hues dominated the collection, but black did make an appearance in the way of cocktail-ready dresses. The rest of the eveningwear portion provided red carpet attire options with studded one-shoulder dresses and high-slit maxi-length gowns. The bottom line? Get ready to hit the gym for Spring. More details from the collection below.

  • Trends: Bandeau tops, short suit sets, pencil skirts, sea-life prints, high slits, minidresses.
  • Colors: White, black, pastel yellow, blue, purple, and green.
  • Key Look: We loved all of the sexy short sets.
  • Accessories: Lucite heels, studded clutches, stacked bracelets.
  • Who Would Wear It: Girls who loves standout partywear like Rihanna and Beyonce.

Between the Emmys, London and Milan Fashion Weeks, and NYC's Ballet Gala, there were lots of fashionable fêtes happening this week — and our favorite style stars hit the red carpet dressed to the nines. While some stuck with short frocks, a select few went all out in sleek, sophisticated, floor-length gowns. Sienna Miller partied in beaded Dior, Natalia Vodianova dazzled in feathered Givenchy Couture, and a pregnant Beyoncé showed off her growing bump in a clingy Lanvin number. Bar Refaeli left her hotel in Barcelona looking cute and casual on her way to an amusement park with a friend. She donned a lapis and white striped tee with true blue skinnies and nude flats. Bar's embellished belt and saddle bag complemented her laid-back look while her Ray-Ban wayfarers upped its cool factor. Tis the season for wild print, which poses an exciting opportunity for Etro to flex its print-happy muscle for Spring 2012. The collection delivered just that, but it also gave us fringe-detailed dresses and jackets and '20s-inspired dresses. Our full collection to come, but for now, check out the pics!

Max Mara: Spring 2012

Max Mara delivered an expectedly minimalist Spring 2012 collection, but this season there was an extra lean, sporty element. Think racerback tanks and capri leggings, delivered in colorblocked palettes of aqua, tan, and cream, which might be unwearable for most of us, but thankfully there were loosely structured anoraks, sporty gold lurex jackets, and balloon tunics with which to layer. It was a stripped-down collection that seemed focused on silhouettes, specifically a trim silhouette, and the only fashion fat came from the use of gold lurex and leather to add depth.

  • Trends: Sporty, minimalism, racerbacks, anoraks, jumpsuits.
  • Colors: Tan, aqua, cream, gold.
  • Key Piece: The flowy anoraks and short gold lurex jacket; the strapless jumpsuit.
  • Accessories: Espadrilles.
  • Who Would Wear It: Girls with super toned arms — we could see Katie Holmes in the jumpsuit.

Fall 2011 Trend Breakdown: Getting the Gothic Glam Look

Dark, moody romanticism was explored on many a Fall runway — from the head-to-toe jet-black looks at Lanvin and Rick Owens, to the mercurial floaty chiffon pieces at Roberto Cavalli, we're feeling this slightly fatalistic trend.
How to Get the Gothic Romance Look For Fall 2011

Dark, moody romanticism was explored on many a Fall runway — from the head-to-toe jet-black looks at Lanvin and Rick Owens, to the mercurial floaty chiffon pieces at Roberto Cavalli, we're feeling this slightly fatalistic trend. You can also glean some goth-glam inspiration from Katia Selinger in this spread for L'Officiel Brazil's September 2011 issue, swathed in sultry black chiffon, elbow-length leather gloves, and severe hair and makeup. It's quite clear that Fall's glamour girl is one of mystery, subtle seduction, and quiet confidence.

Here's how to get the look:

  • Focus on fabrics. Materials like velvet, lace, silk, leather, and chiffon play nicely to the moody, romantic Fall feel.
  • Layer up for ultimate luxe. Part of the allure of the gothic romance look is the effortless, devil-may-care attitude with which layers are worn. Pair a maxi skirt with an ultra long, slouchy knit sweater, followed by a blazer or fur vest.
  • Romanticism isn't about showing it all off; balance your look with a high neckline for the ultimate in gothic glamour.
