Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti Fall 2012

Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti Fall 2012

There was a cinematic kind of drama to the Fall 2012 collection of Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti. First, the elegant setting — Avery Fisher Hall, which is home to New York's Philharmonic Orchestra, was built in the '60s and reflects midcentury form in a warm palette of cream, brass, and wood. Cue the orchestral soundtrack, and finally the models, who came up a weirdly chic escalator and walked the eternally long hall only to disappear down the other escalator. It felt a little bit like the end of a movie, playing over and over again. If that's the case, the heroine we would imagine to be a very elegant woman from the 1960s with a taste for sparkle on her pert shirt collars, lucite belts to cinch her tailored skirt suit, and a fur jacket encased in plastic (in case it rains). It was as if last season's cute '60s girl, who wore shades of pink and purple and yellow with aplomb, grew up, got a job, married rich, maybe had an affair (we're thinking of Tilda Swinton in the beautifully shot Milan-based film I Am Love), and saw her tastes evolve a bit — still feminine, but a lot more elegant.

  • Trends: Ladylike, sparkly embellishments, skirt suits, monochromatic dressing, lucite, plastic, '60s elegant.
  • Colors: Gray, cream, nude, camel.
  • Key Piece: Any of the tops with sparkly collars, a beautiful ombré camel coat.
  • Accessories: Lucite belts, chic little briefcases, silver-tipped stilettos.
  • Who Would Wear It: Sophisticated, feminine dressers with a taste for unusual details.

Found! Jessica Alba Makes Yellow Work For Winter in Ann Taylor

Jessica Alba strolled the streets of NYC looking impeccable in blue cat-eye sunglasses and chunky black booties.

Jessica Alba strolled the streets of NYC looking impeccable in blue cat-eye sunglasses and chunky black booties. But it's what's under her black coat that we're really eying: a striped Ann Taylor sweater and Hudson yellow skinny jeans. We love Jessica's understated pops of color, including her pink crossbody bag. She shows that, with the right amount of balance with dark hues, brights can be worn in the cold. Plus, colorful stripes are right on trend this season, so take a cue from this fashionista and pair your favorite striped sweater with colored jeans. Or, for a more dressed-up approach, wear your striped top with a full skirt and ankle-strap wedges.

Zara Zeroes In On Print-Mixing, Color Combos, and Luxe Leather For March

We had to take a break from the Fall runways to sneak a peek at Zara's pretty March arrivals.
Zara March 2012

We had to take a break from the Fall runways to sneak a peek at Zara's pretty March arrivals. It goes without saying that the brand's a favorite for its oh-so-accessible take on the trends. Case in point: the printed blazers that we saw on the catwalks last September are resurfacing at the retailer in statement florals and eye-popping paisley (a perfect pick-me-up for your nine-to-five). Add to that a mix of playful pastel color pairings, delicately embellished collars, and a Spring-ready studded white leather jacket, and it's as if Zara tapped into our very own seasonal wish list — and delivered everything we could ask for. Read on for our key takeaways, then click through to start your shopping list.

  • We love the tough-girl feel of this studded leather jacket, albeit in an accessible Spring hue. Throw this on with anything from a little printed dress to colorblocked separates for an effortless edginess.
  • We're adding this fringed mini to our wish lists. An ideal antidote to the typical seasonal garb with that utterly cool Isabel Marant quality.
  • A pair of floral shorts are a must have this season. We'll dress them up with heels and a slouchy knit for evenings or pare them down with a button-down and loafers for day.

When in Paris: Vanessa Hudgens Majorly Steps Up Her Style Overseas

Vanessa Hudgens's Cali street style has come to be defined as disheveled bohemian.

Vanessa Hudgens's Cali street style has come to be defined as disheveled bohemian. She's usually spotted in '70s-inspired pieces like loose-fitting maxi dresses and lots of mixed prints and color. But you know what they say: when in Rome . . . or shall we say Paris. While shopping in the City of Lights, the actress took her sidewalk style to a whole new sophisticated level, and we j'adore. She started with black pieces like a ruffled, one-shoulder blouse, cardigan, Chanel bag, and Elizabeth and James ruched booties. Then to chic things up even more, she wore white cropped trousers but kept her signature stacked rings to remain authentic to her taste. The good news is that you don't have to be in France to pull off Vanessa's ensemble. It would work just as beautifully in the States, at the office or at a casual gathering.

Oscar de la Renta Fall 2012

We can always count on Oscar de la Renta for red-carpet perfect dresses and the most elevated execution of ladylike wares, and this season was no exception to the rule.

We can always count on Oscar de la Renta for red-carpet perfect dresses and the most elevated execution of ladylike wares, and this season was no exception to the rule. Marked by a definitive nod to the refined woman, Oscar upped his fantasy fashion quotient with a collection positively dripping in jewels. Teardrop-shaped pearl earrings, antique-inspired brooches, embellished sheaths, satin-and-diamante headbands, and even jewel-print graphics popped up on the runway. In addition to the dazzle factor, the designer honed in on updating his classic tweed jackets, perfectly tailored circle skirts, and "ladies who lunch" suits for both the younger, daring crew and the more sophisticated set. He adorned dresses with long pastel-hued feathers, added long, chunky cable-knit cardigans for a casual feel, and polished off looks with bejeweled leather belts. And as any fairy-tale show must end, Oscar delivered stunning, princess-worthy, or in this case — Academy Awards-worthy — ball gowns. These frothy, ethereal creations boasted full skirts, slightly drawn up in front like theater curtains, and off-the-shoulder necklines, and of course, they have "A-list" written all over them. See below for more Oscar de la Renta details.

  • Trends: Jewel embellishments, brooches, refined suits, and fairy-tale gowns.
  • Colors: Soft pink, powder blue, red, and black.
  • Key Piece: The voluminous jaw-dropping ball gowns in both slate blue and muted pink — chances are, we'll be seeing these confections on the red carpet very soon.
  • Accessories: Teardrop-shaped pearl earrings, antique-inspired brooches, fishnet stockings, velvet bow tie shoes, and satin-and-diamante headbands.
  • Who Would Wear It: Oscar de la Renta's arsenal of loyal fans, like Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Chastain, and Anna Wintour.

Inspired Style: Add Texture to Your Wrist à la Sienna's Ridge Cuff

While many were focused on Sienna Miller's growing baby bump at last night's W magazine event in NYC, we were mesmerized by the Pamela Love ridge cuff ($685) she wore with her long black Boss Black halter dress.

While many were focused on Sienna Miller's growing baby bump at last night's W magazine event in NYC, we were mesmerized by the Pamela Love ridge cuff ($685) she wore with her long black Boss Black halter dress. It took her wrist to totally badass places that bangles just couldn't. See what we mean? Expecting or not, the next time you're about to reach for those same-old-same bangles, stop yourself and opt to add edgy texture to your wrist instead. It'll add spunk to everything from a fancy LBD to a flirty floral frock to simple gray jeans and a white tee. If Sienna's exact cuff is too pricey for your jewelry budget, shop our favorite similarly textured options below.
