Jean Paul Gaultier Fall 2012

In true Jean Paul Gaultier fashion, Fall 2012 is a rocker chick's dream.

In true Jean Paul Gaultier fashion, Fall 2012 is a rocker chick's dream. Steeped in streetwear influences and a cult punk band vibe, the designer certainly had the underground on his mind. So much so, that everything from woven jacquard trousers to satin-sheen cocktail frocks were embellished with retro bright '80s-style graffiti prints. But don't let the urban-inspired designs fool you. Gaultier amped up his tough-girl outlook with altogether luxe add-ons and with a surprisingly ladylike polish. Think slick metallic accents, velvet gowns, ultra-tailored suits in even more exotic snakeskin iterations, colorful fur stoles and capes, and voluminous cinching. Most interesting to note (aside from the stick straight flat-ironed hair, complete with spray painted middle parts)? The designer's attention to "two-in-one" pieces. Take, for example, the bronzed trench coat worn around the waist as a full skirt or the dress turned cape — much of the statement outerwear doubled in functionality and in coolness. See below for more Jean Paul Gaultier details.

  • Trends: Menswear-inspired snakeskin suits, two-in-one pieces, velvet, graffiti prints, and luxe embellishments.
  • Colors: Black, red, bronze, brown, white, gray, orange, and bright pink.
  • Key Look: With Jean Paul Gaultier, it's always about the tailoring. His Fall '12 lineup of well-cut jackets, trenches, and trousers take the cake.
  • Accessories: Wide belts, fur stoles and capes, leather gloves, and T-strap sandals.
  • Who Would Wear It: Long-time fans like Madonna and Dita Von Teese, and an edgier style setter like Diane Kruger or Carey Mulligan.

Vivienne Westwood Fall 2012

If not for Vivienne Westwood, rocker chicks would have nothing to wear — and for Fall 2012, Westwood gives them plenty in the form of tulle, tartan, and t-shirts.
Vivienne Westwood Runway Fall 2012

If not for Vivienne Westwood, rocker chicks would have nothing to wear — and for Fall 2012, Westwood gives them plenty in the form of tulle, tartan, and t-shirts. Westwood always has a knack for wonderfully peculiar tailoring, in this case it's seen on sharp, angular blazers that look like origami structures and gigantic silhouettes, which for Fall are layered and oversized and bring to mind Mary-Kate Olsen during her "hobo-chic" phase. When it came to dressing up, Victorian-inspired sequin and marabou gowns were kept slightly unfinished, bringing a decidedly rugged, grunge-chic edge, and corseted coats were punctuated with sleek shadow-stripe silks. The collection wasn't presented without its share of showmanship, however; models rode bikes in girlie marabou dresses, carried bunches of blooms, and teetered on super-high platform heels down the runway. All in all, Vivienne Westwood's Fall '12 collection was a carefully curated and perfectly haphazard 17th-century soiree.

  • Trends: Plaid, mixed prints, iridescent silks, tulle skirts, marabou.
  • Colors: White, peach, baby blue, black, silver.
  • Key Look: The grunge-cool marabou dress with metallic silver gloves, elevator platforms — and a bike.
  • Accessories: Sky-high flatforms, jaunty newsboy caps, elbow-length gloves.
  • Who Would Wear It: Offbeat style setters with a punk rock edge.

Cacharel Fall 2012

Cacharel Fall 2012 was a feminine ode to the idea of flight, complete with chic flight suits, aviator caps, necklaces that looked like they had been cut from a plane's wing, and a color palette that reminded one of blue skies and clouds.
Cacharel Runway Fall 2012

Cacharel Fall 2012 was a feminine ode to the idea of flight, complete with chic flight suits, aviator caps, necklaces that looked like they had been cut from a plane's wing, and a color palette that reminded one of blue skies and clouds. No surprise, then, to hear the inspiration was none other than Amelia Earhart. The contemporary line is beloved for its effortless take on feminine dressing, and this season proved no exception, with plenty of soft dresses and skirts, knit sweaters, and belted coats.

  • Trends: jumpsuits, graphic patterns, 20s, aviation.
  • Colors: baby blue, red, salmon, slate, gray, yellow.
  • Key Look: the jumpsuits, knit sweaters.
  • Accessories: aviator caps, red platforms.
  • Who Would Wear It: Girls with feminine taste, think Jessica Alba and Kirsten Dunst.

Lanvin Runway Fall 2012

Feminine opulence pervaded the Lanvin Fall 2012 collection, and how gorgeous it was. Elbaz has always stressed the importance of designing for women, and in this collection, women's curves took center stage, with the focus on the waist. The defining factors? Peplum, balloon sleeves, and lots of belting and draping, which weaved themselves mostly into dresses, but outerwear and richly-hued furs as well. The show opened with a series of jewel-hued pieces — sleek shifts with ruffled details at the neck or down the back, peplum tops paired with slim pencil skirts — then moved through a sexy series of black outfits of leather and fur fit for the edgy city chick. The final act was the most theatrical — dresses were embellished with lace and jewels, or done in rich velvet, or layered with ruffled, jewel-toned furs and accessorized with opera gloves. Finally, the jewelry: statement necklaces fit for a queen, but sure to decorate the necks of fashionable girls everywhere next season. Click to see the whole collection, as it's a beauty.

  • Trends: Bejeweled dresses, peplum, ruffles, opulent dressing, belting, elbow-length gloves.
  • Colors: Purple, blue, red, hunter green, gold, gray, black.
  • Key Piece: Bejeweled, curvaceous cocktail dresses; the peplum tops, the jewelry.
  • Accessories: Big, fit-for-a-queen statement necklaces.
  • Who Would Wear It: Fashion-forward glamour girls — Natalie Portman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julianne Moore.
