Emmys Trendspotting: It's All About the Fishtail Flare

While it may not be a new trend, a fresh, sexier-than-ever batch of fishtail hems took the Emmys red carpet tonight.

While it may not be a new trend, a fresh, sexier-than-ever batch of fishtail hems took the Emmys red carpet tonight. Thus, it proves (once again) that the mermaid silhouette is a perennial favorite with Hollywood's A-list set. Without delving into the obvious complications of this style (pray for a stair-less venue!), the flared finish certainly provides a kind of dramatic glamour that demands attention. It's flirty, feminine, and because of its asymmetrical cut, allows for the gown to hit at a body-hugging angle. Translation: let's just say fishtail hems inevitably enhance every curve. Need proof? Sofia Vergara showed off her svelte figure in an embellished teal Zuhair Murad number, Allison Williams stunned in emerald green Oscar de la Renta, and Cat Deeley turned it out in a red Tadashi Shoji creation. The Bombshell Is Back: Bodacious Silhouettes Reign at Tonight's Emmys

Tonight's body-conscious cuts proved that sometimes a woman's best accessories are the assets she already has. With low-cut necklines, bustier-style strapless tops, and generally décolletage-enhancing silhouettes, it was clear that the Emmys marked a return to va-va-voom red-carpet dressing. Overtly sexy silhouettes were the rule in this lineup from Heidi Klum, who flashed a little skin in her Alexandre Vauthier gown, Kat Dennings, who played up her assets in a J. Mendel strapless, and Sofia Vergara, with a crisscross, cutout neckline on her Zuhair Murad gown that spoke to her signature glamazon look. But it wasn't just the dramatic print that caught our attention; the look took a sexier turn, thanks to the gown's attention-getting sculptural neckline and asymmetrical hemline that revealed a look at the actress's stems. Add to that the ruched waistline and vampy pointed-toe pumps, and it was an all-around sultry appearance from Elisabeth, who finished the look with a few sparkling add-ons, like an armful of diamond bracelets and a pearl-embellished clutch in hand. Be still, our hearts — Kerry Washington fulfilled our girlie obsession with sequins, sparkle, and a perfectly executed draped neckline. And how? Her stunning Vivienne Westwood gown could very well be straight out of a Studio 54 nightclub scene, and we're 100 percent behind this particular brand of '70s disco-ball glam, mostly because Kerry pulls it off so well. As if her embellished gown wasn't enough, she had to one-up herself with a slick reptilian-textured clutch, complete with a bronzed lizard add-on. Are you as enamored of this ensemble as we are?

Peasant-style sleeves and lace paneling gave the dress a romantic feel, but it was really all about the accessories. Melissa amped up her look with a studded black clutch, sparkling drop earrings, and a jeweled cocktail ring. How'd she do?

Well, that's one way to make a serious statement: Amy Poehler may in fact be recently separated from husband Will Arnett, but she used the Emmys red carpet to assert herself as a hot, single nominee. We've never seen Amy look this hot — she dazzled tonight in a low-cut, beaded Stella McCartney gown and smartly decided to go easy on the jewelry. After all, a look this sexy doesn't need much adornment. Amy wore a pair of beaded drop earrings and adorably slipped on a plastic ring from her sons' toy box — bringing new life to the term "hot mom." What do you think of Amy's look tonight?

Cat's one-shoulder gown, which spanned the gap between red and orange, featured a ruffle — which reminded us of the leaves that are soon to fall — leading into sharp tailoring and pleat work that created a sleek yet feminine gown.
