The trouble with the runway is that we rarely get to indulge in purchasing all the designs we see on it — but sometimes having the exact outfit isn't really the point. Sometimes, it's just about a single great styling lesson. Think about the J.Crew lookbook, for example. You don't have to be wearing the J.Crew label to benefit from Jenna Lyon's masterful half-tuck or rolled sleeves. That's the beauty of Burberry's Fall '14 catwalk — we don't need the dresses plucked from the runway, we just want to apply the same styling tactics to the ones that are already in our closet.

In this case, it's the elegantly belted scarves applied to the floaty, printed dresses, like the one Cara Delevingne showed off. Of course, like any great trend, it went from the runway to the streets, seen on one of our favorite street style darlings. Now, it's the Fall styling trick we can't stop thinking about — or wearing — with everything from our pencil skirts and sweaters at the office to our flared denim and blouses on weekends. Just scroll through to get the details on the easiest styling lesson you'll get all season.

When Cara Delevingne strutted down the catwalk layered up in a flowy, printed dress and a scarf belted right on top, the effect was impossibly chic.

Then Olivia Palermo brought it to the streets.

Leave it to Olivia Palermo to take the look directly from the catwalk to the sidewalk this Fall, reminding us just how much we loved the look in the first place.

Then, she showed us how versatile it is.

The second time Olivia showed off the look, she made it her own with a bright blue printed scarf belted over a lacy white dress to add a pop of color and a touch of seasonality. Same girl, same styling tactics employed, totally different look.

The look isn't just for fashion darlings and runway models. This showgoer also brought Burberry to the street, adding her patterned scarf over her patterned dress for the same elegant, albeit playful, print-on-print effect.

Shiona Turini gave the look her own twist — she gave a white shirt dress new dimension with a fringed and printed wrap belted at the waist.

But really, Taylor Tomasi Hill was doing it before anyone else.

But really, Taylor Tomasi Hill was doing it before anyone else.

When we retraced our street style history, we realized fashion pro Taylor Tomasi Hill was employing this tactic long before we saw it come down the Burberry runway. Instead of adding the scarf to a dress, she used a striped, heavier knit to break up the solid blue of her separates and gave us a whole new way to wear our Fall and Winter wraps. It's almost too simple not to try — just shop our favorite belt and scarves below to get the look!
