Grace Coddington, September Issue Director Collaborating on Another Film?

>> Grace Coddington has been spotted dining often with The September Issue director RJ Cutler, and it sounds like it's not just purely out of friendship.  When Coddington was in London last week for the British Fashion Awards, she told the Times UK Cutler is working her illustrated book Catwalk Cats into a film treatment: “It’s a bit of a battle, actually.

I’m fighting for it not to turn into some Disney thing.”

Despite all the newfound attention The September Issue has brought her — at least five people come up to her on the subway every morning — she's not planning on becoming a press hound:

Do you ever see me giving interviews? I’m never one of those people talking into a microphone at the end of a show. I’m not prepared to crush some poor designer who’s just spent six months slaving over a collection. I think it’s horrible and they all [the pundits] talk about themselves. Plus, the questions are so stupid . . . I hate trends. And you know the question they always ask me at shows; ‘What’s the latest trend?’”

R.J. Cutler is Working on a Film Starring Grace Coddington's Catwalk Cats

Vogue creative director and star of The September Issue, Grace Coddington, is getting used to all the public attention she's received since the film's release, telling the Times UK that at least five strangers approach her on the subway every morning.

Vogue creative director and star of The September Issue, Grace Coddington, is getting used to all the public attention she's received since the film's release, telling the Times UK that at least five strangers approach her on the subway every morning. “It’s driving me nuts, actually,” she says. “And I’m loving it.”

Coddington famously ignored director R.J. Cutler's cameras when they arrived on the 12th floor of 4 Times Square to film the Vogue documentary, telling Anna Wintour either the crew leaves or she would. Eventually Cutler won the genius redhead over (through a meeting with his cinematographer) and secured key footage of the power struggle and mutual admiration between Wintour and Coddington from which the film pulls its most compelling story.

Now Cutler and Coddington are again working together on a film based loosely on "The Catwalk Cats" a book penned and illustrated by Coddington. “It’s a bit of a battle, actually,” she says of the collaboration. “I’m fighting for it not to turn into some Disney thing.” Somehow we think she'll get her way.

Spills and Thrills at the 2009 British Fashion Awards

>> Last night's British Fashion Awards provided a forum for all kinds of announcements — Christopher Bailey, who accepted both BFC Designer Brand of the Year for Burberry and BFC Designer of the Year, confirmed that Burberry will show in London again for Fall 2010; and Victoria Beckham said she's planning to take an active role in the BFC that in which she would mentor young designers or serve as an ambassador.

Christopher Kane was awarded BFC British Collection of the Year, Kate Moss won the publicly-voted London 25 Award, Peter Pilotto nabbed the Swarovski Emerging Talent Award for Ready-to-wear, and Georgia May Jagger took the BFC Model of the Year award — "Thank you so much to the BFC for picking me. I'd just like to say [fellow nominees] Daisy [Lowe] and Rosie [Huntington-Whiteley] are amazing girls and amazing models. Thanks to my mum for being the biggest inspiration."

But the model who really stole the night was Karen Elson, who, when onstage to present Grace Coddington with the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator, walked straight into the orchestra pit and fell four feet out of sight.  She emerged minutes later, ”I am the clumsiest person on this earth. I cannot believe I just did that. That is the worst fall I have ever had. I might have broken a rib, but I’m fine.” After presenting, she took to the emergency room to see about her injuries — including a sprained thumb.

Sophie Theallet Takes Home 2009 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Win

>> Last night, with the help of keynote speaker Alber Elbaz, who doled out gems on the perils of success — "It's like a bottle of perfume. You smell it, you don't sniff it or drink it" — Alaia veteran and Michelle Obama favorite Sophie Theallet took home the 2009 Vogue/Fashion Fund prize of $200,000 and a year of mentoring.  Fellow nominees Patrik Ervell and Monique Pean were named runners-up, and received $50,000 each plus a business mentor.

In her speech, Anna Wintour said that in addition to the US, Italy, and the UK — which just started a similar talent-nurturing program — she just met with the French minister of culture about mirroring the contest there. "And Brazil, India, Russia, and China aren't far behind."

Theallet Tweeted of her win: "my american dream comes true tonight thanks and much love to all of you!xox."  Cathy Horyn, too, weighed in on the choice:

"The money and the mentoring will help Ms. Theallet because she needs to be able to offer more range in her collection, as well as expand her production options. She has such a distinctly feminine eye, and the skills, that I’ve often wondered why a big retailer doesn’t ask Ms. Theallet to design some blouses and summer dresses for them, using the store’s resources and manufacturing connections."

Videos of the nominees going through the competition and the awards ceremony last night can be seen here and here, respectively.

Gwen Stefani led the pack yesterday at Fashion Group International's annual Night of Stars in NYC. She struck a pose in black alongside fellow designer Eva Mendes, while Dita von Teese and Evan Rachel Wood apparently managed to avoid an awkward run-in. Gucci model James Franco took a break from his other Big Apple activities to smile for the cameras next to the house's designer, Frida Giannini, and Mary J. Blige. Mary and Frida were together earlier in the day to open the new Mary J. Blige Center For Women in Yonkers, and their charitable ways continued into the evening of celebrating the year's best fashionable good deeds.

Louis Vuitton Spring 2010: All Clogs, Raccoon Tails, and Massive Fros

>> Louis Vuitton started exactly on time this afternoon, leaving more than a few editors shut out and half the front row empty; of those who did make it inside in time, some were still on the runway when the show commenced, leaving opener Patricia Van der Vliet to barge right through.  Every single girl had on a sky-high afros, each made from five smaller wigs sewn together, which bobbed "up and down like big pom pom balls" as they walked; Grace Coddington apparently "whooped with delight" at the first sight of them.

A flurry of models were front row — Sophie Dahl and her fiance Jamie Cullum, Natalia Vodianova, Daisy Lowe — but Georgia May Jagger was a surprise on the catwalk.  The show, inspired by the '80s and '90s New Age traveller and “street clothes, embracing the hippie-cyber, tribal-punk world,” according to Marc Jacobs, included everything from kitten-heeled clogs to bags with raccoon tails — straight from Williamsburg hipsters — to bike shorts and glitter anoraks.  And Jacobs himself wore a pair of the furry clogs for the finale.
