Best of 2008: Fabulous Fashion Week Shows

2008 spawned a tremendous flurry of fabulous Fashion Week shows.

2008 spawned a tremendous flurry of fabulous Fashion Week shows. Let's see, there were New York Fall and Spring shows, Milan Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, London Fashion Week, and LA Fashion Week. Oh, and don't forget all of the ravishing Resort and Pre-Fall collections. Some of my faves were Proenza Schouler's Fall line, Alexander Wang's Spring offerings, and Balmain's Spring collection in Paris. All different, all divine. Which were your favorites? Sarah Larson

Sarah Larson Works the Runway Hard For the Money

George Clooney's girlfriend Sarah Larson hit the runway of LA Fashion Week last night, looking a far cry from the glamorous Oscars.

George Clooney's girlfriend Sarah Larson hit the runway of LA Fashion Week last night, looking a far cry from the glamorous Oscars. She walked the catwalk as part of the Ashley Paige swimwear show in some one-piece suits and severe makeup. I'm not sure they're her, um, best looks, but that's hardly her fault. Sarah's been an "actress/model" for a while now, recently posing for the cover of Via Bellagio, a Vegas magazine, and some Catherine Malandrino shows. I'm not going to say her A-List boyfriend landed her last night's gig, but it certainly made it news. Unfortunately, George didn't come out to watch his lady strut her stuff — though maybe he just didn't want to steal her spotlight?

LA Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Jenny Han

Jenny Han knows how to please the ladies.

Jenny Han knows how to please the ladies. Hard partying, Melrose shopping, brunch eating ladies. Her Fall collection of super femme designs has something for everyone.

Since 2004, Han has been churning out clothes that are “effortlessly elegant” and “indefinably charming," and her Fall collection is just that. With some youthful prints and thigh high mini skirts to add zest.

Silky party dresses, wide legged pants, cuffed shorts and sexy knits were all pleasing to the eye. Her cute outerwear showed skill in tailoring and her mix of prints showed whimsy. Though some things felt out of place, as I said before, there was something for everyone.

LA Fashion Week Trend Alert: Little Red Riding Hood

Randomly, Little Red Riding Hood made an appearance on the catwalks of LA Fashion Week.

Randomly, Little Red Riding Hood made an appearance on the catwalks of LA Fashion Week. Except, the brave little girl came in the form of tall, beanpole models showing off a Fall 2008 trend: hoods. Striped cardigans had hoods at the Whitley Kros show (left); coats at the Alexis Lamontagna collection came hooded (right); and one of Octavio Carlin's silk dresses even incorporated the style. Before hoods signified a laid-back style, now they are a symbol of dressed-up cool. Come Fall, throwing on a frock with a hood means looking slick and covering up a bad hair day!

Falguni & Shane Peacock: Love It or Hate It?

After a couple ho-hum shows at LA Fashion Week, this show was definitely not boring.

After a couple ho-hum shows at LA Fashion Week, this show was definitely not boring. Falguni & Shane Peacock sent out print after print of sexily draped dresses which would have been wonderful, if it wasn't for an excessive use of rhinestone and beading adornments. While a lesson in constraint was in order, I was wondering what you thought about this draped one shoulder print dress — don't forget to pay attention to those rhinestones on the bodice. It's sort of like Rami from Project Runway meets Roberto Cavalli. Do you likey?

Nicky Hilton

Exclusive Fab Interview With Nicholai by Nicky Hilton!

Let me tell ya, coming to LA Fashion Week, I was not expecting to claim Nicholai by Nicky Hilton as my favorite collection.

Let me tell ya, coming to LA Fashion Week, I was not expecting to claim Nicholai by Nicky Hilton as my favorite collection. The naughty equestrian clothes were desirable, but the designer herself was delightful. A supportive big sis Paris showed up backstage and naturally caused a frenzy. Oh, but before approaching Nicky and the photogs, Paris asked to see a mirror to inspect herself in her red Nicholai dress!
When the chaos died down, I chatted with Nicky, who immediately complimented me on my H&M scarf! Despite giving over a dozen interviews, she remained cheerful and sweet. It looks like designing comes pretty naturally to this — ahem — Hilton. As if things couldn't have gotten any better than meeting Nicky and sitting amongst her family during the show, they did. As we were waiting for the valet to bring our car, Nicky drove right past us in boyfriend David Katzenberg's Range Rover, but not before giving us a smile, a wave . . . and a kiss. Aw!

Congrats on another successful collection, Nicky. How do you feel?

I’m excited, I’m relieved, I’m thrilled. Everything went really well and smoothly so I’m very content.

What was your inspiration behind this collection?

The inspiration this season was equestrian, but I wanted to make it a naughty and nice. It was equestrian meets bondage and S&M, hence the latex leggings, patent leather buckles, and the whip. I wanted it to be sophisticated, tasteful, and edgy at the same time.

LA Fashion Week, Fall 2008: The Lauren Conrad Collection

As we hoped, Lauren Conrad stepped up her game for her first runway showing and Fall collection for The Lauren Conrad Collection.

As we hoped, Lauren Conrad stepped up her game for her first runway showing and Fall collection for The Lauren Conrad Collection. And, to our excitement, all her friends were there to share in her glory.

In the front row sat Whitney, Audrina, Lo, Kristin, Brody and Frankie — all giddy and excited to be at Smashbox Studios. FabSugar was on the other side of the runway amidst Lauren's family (funny huh?). We sat next to her grandmother and had some words with her mom and sister. They were very proud and thought the show was fabulous. When asked what her sis's favorite piece was, she said the strapless ivory ruffle dress (pictured) — very cute indeed. Very Lauren!

The French flair — berets, leather gloves, and chic pumps — added a certain je ne sai quoi to the collection, and helped create the girl Lauren is trying to convey. These pieces were an improvement from what we've seen from Lauren thus far; some were the casual cute pieces we know, some were form-fitting and flirtatious and will want to get to know. The palette was autumnal: ivory, terra cotta, plum, olive green, and there was plenty of black, Lauren's self-proclaimed favorite color. High waisted skirts, a zippy botanical print and lace were new additions. Let's put it this way: there was less bubble and more bodacious.

These are clearly clothes Lauren and her posse want to wear so my question is: Do you want to wear them too?

I started you off with this Juicy Couture Link Wide Bracelet ($148) because it goes with the sophisticated cool vibe I'm striving for.

Let's see what you all came up with!

Look # 1, created by elanakat is total California chic; I love how the skirt pulls some of that LA sunshine into the outfit.

LA Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Whitley Kros

It was all checkerboard chicks at Whitley Kros' Fall '08 show!

It was all checkerboard chicks at Whitley Kros' Fall '08 show! This time around, Marissa Ribisi (Giovanni's twin sis, in case you forgot) and Sophia Banks whipped up a more '80s-inspired collection, but as always, they delivered the fun.

Models, including America's Next Top Model cycle nine second runner up Chantal Jones, sashayed down the catwalk in oodles of plaid, large black and white checkers, and zebra-emblazoned pieces, as stars like Bijou Phillips and Jenna Elfman looked on. Polished high-waisted skirts and cardigan dresses balanced out the masculine baggy trousers and blazers.

A few zebra-in-the-crotch pants were random, but I much appreciated the two-tone fringe scarves and bursts of vibrant colors. Any collection that can have fun despite the moodiness of Fall is Fab in my book.
