Backstage Beauty: Peter Som

While FabSugar attended the Peter Som fashion show last season, they were unable to make it on this trip—but that's okay.

While FabSugar attended the Peter Som fashion show last season, they were unable to make it on this trip—but that's okay. BellaSugar's got the goods on how to create the sexy, tousled hair from this season's Spring 2008 show.

The goal of lead hairstylist Eugene Souleiman was to have runway hair that looked fresh, young and natural, with a slight edge. He is quoted saying, "It's the look of the uptown girl that parties downtown."

And on a makeup note, was anyone else surprised they the models weren't wearing the Peter Som for Lancome lipstick? I guess that is just so Fall '07.

Backstage Beauty: VPL

Last week, our FabSugar team attended the VPL Spring 2008 Fashion Show.

Last week, our FabSugar team attended the VPL Spring 2008 Fashion Show. While the clothing was sheer and chic, and the makeup was pretty and plain, the hair was va va voom!

While most of us do whatever we can to fight the frizzies, hairstylist extraordinaire Neil Moodie, created a wild, crimped 'do that made those frizzies, kinda flattering. All of the products he used were from Bumble and Bumble, and the entire process is relatively easy to achieve.

The Look: Alice + Olivia in Wonderland

This week my girl FabSugar found herself at the Alice + Olivia Alice in Wonderland themed show.

This week my girl FabSugar found herself at the Alice + Olivia Alice in Wonderland themed show. While the clothing is absolutely gorgeous — lots of bold patterns and frilly sleeves — and the hair wonderfully mod, I was really excited to discover that she was on Yum patrol and snapped lots of photos of the nosh and drinks.

An ornate yellow table and matching yellow chairs stood in the center of the room. On the table black, white and yellow dinnerware echoed the black, white and yellow backdrops and furniture in the store — including a suspended upside-down piano.

The table was filled with delightful goodies, such as "Eat Me" labeled cupcakes from Crumbs, black M&Ms, mini pb & j sandwiches and fluffernutter sandwiches too. The perfect finishing touch was definitely the container of Lucid Absinthe — talk about setting the mood! I only wish I could have been there!

What do you guys think? Does this decor fit the mood or what?

Love It or Hate It? Heatherette

Crazy club-kid duo Heatherette isn't known for being subtle, and its models' hairstyles were as over-the-top as you'd expect.

Crazy club-kid duo Heatherette isn't known for being subtle, and its models' hairstyles were as over-the-top as you'd expect. I thought it was a lot of fun, and very young—it reminded me of the way my friends and I would play "hairdresser" as girls.

If you like the winged metallic eyeliner shown here on Chanel Iman (yes, that's her real name), you'll be excited to know that Heatherette will soon have its own makeup line, complete with the lovely Lydia Hearst as its campaign face!

New York Fashion Week Spring 2008, VPL: Love It or Hate It?

In honor of some of the polarizing looks showing at New York Fashion Week, I thought we would do a few fashion week editions of Love It or Hate It!

In honor of some of the polarizing looks showing at New York Fashion Week, I thought we would do a few fashion week editions of Love It or Hate It!

Take this Spring VPL ensemble, with its mustard, gray, and white color palette. It reminds me of an avant-garde ballet outfit, with its leotard-looking layered top and sheer lampshade-inspired skirt. So maybe it's not wearable in the real world, but even as conceptual fashion, do you dig it?

Small Talk with Ilan Hall

Last week our very own FabSugar had the opportunity to chat with Top Chef Season Two winner, Ilan Hall.

Last week our very own FabSugar had the opportunity to chat with Top Chef Season Two winner, Ilan Hall. They were both backstage at the Cynthia Rowley Spring 2008 show — Fab reporting on the looks, and Ilan feeding the masses. Luckily for us, they were both able to take a few minutes from their jobs and provide us with a fun interview.

FabSugar: What did you have for breakfast?
Ilan Hall: I think I had baked chicken skin.

FS: Baked chicken skin?
IH: Yeah, because it's part of one of the dishes, and so I was just tasting it. That's what I got full on.

FS: Any juice or coffee?
IH: I had coffee, lots of coffee.

FS: A successful party is ....
IH: One that you get woken up from on the floor... I don't know.

FS: What's your guilty pleasure food?
IH: Pork skin.

FS: All of the skins!
IH: I know, I know, I've got a fetish.

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Proenza Schouler

When Valentino recently bought a stake in Proenza Schouler, it allowed Jack and Lazaro to keep doing what they're doing, except with more pocket change to throw around.

When Valentino recently bought a stake in Proenza Schouler, it allowed Jack and Lazaro to keep doing what they're doing, except with more pocket change to throw around. I was excited to see what they would do with the extra money: nicer fabrics? Killer shoes?

Here is Proenza Schouler, Chapter 2. The color palette and even the one-shouldered dresses remind me of Balenciaga's Spring 2007 collection. Where the two collections differ, however, in Proenza's tribal graphic prints, military-inspiration, and lots of leg. The collection is very tactile; some long astroturf-like fringe appears in all different colors and in all different places: sleeves, skirts, entire dresses. There is also an obsession with belts, as well, only one pair of pants appears in the entire collection!

All in all, this collection feels a tad recycled from past runways, and not necessarily very Spring-y, but I do love those Proenza boys so maybe they just need to figure out how to spend that extra dough wisely...

Love it or Hate It? White Winged Eyeliner at BCBG

On Wednesday afternoon, the highly anticipated BCBG Spring 2008 show took center stage in the Bryant Park tents.

On Wednesday afternoon, the highly anticipated BCBG Spring 2008 show took center stage in the Bryant Park tents. FabSugar seemed to be smitten by the clothing, but I'm not entirely sold on the makeup choice to match. Here are a couple of pictures of the pretty Jessica Stam from before and during the show. How do you feel about this white winged eyeliner look?

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Jeremy Laing

He's been on my radar for a while now, but since I finally got to see his work in person, it's confirmed: 27-year-old Toronto-based designer Jeremy Laing is definitely one to watch.

He's been on my radar for a while now, but since I finally got to see his work in person, it's confirmed: 27-year-old Toronto-based designer Jeremy Laing is definitely one to watch. These pictures, from his Spring collection, don't do them justice. Especially because a lot of the finer details are in the backs of his designs, which you can't see in my runway pictures.

His inspiration for the collection was the arctic in Spring; so a mix of grays, white, and beige with shots of chartreuse and fuchsia. The dresses were gorgeous - expertly constructed and cape-like construction or extra flowing material in the back. Overall, beautiful work that really paves the way for modern design. Bravo.

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Rachel Comey

You know how there's this male fantasy about a buttoned up but secretly sexy librarian?

You know how there's this male fantasy about a buttoned up but secretly sexy librarian? Rachel Comey's Spring collection was a hodge-podge of sassy primped up looks.

It took place in a rec center gym where you could literally smell the dust. But the live surfer tune band and comprehensive collection made up for the musk. Offering separates from flirty skirts, tie neck blouses, high waisted capris to completely cute cut out dresses - there was something for everyone. The retro prints of floral and art mixed things up, and the palette was sometimes rich, sometimes muted. Lightweight knits made a cameo, as well as sporty T-backs, supplying edge to the good girl vibe. Rachel topped off her sexy librarians with thick-rimmed specs and crimped side dos. Silence please!
