Paris Fashion Week: Christian Dior Fall 2009 Video

John Galliano loves taking inspiration from moments in history so rich with possibilities that they make standbys like "The 80's" seem positively lazy.

John Galliano loves taking inspiration from moments in history so rich with possibilities that they make standbys like "The 80's" seem positively lazy. This season, at Christian Dior, it was French designer Paul Poiret's Eastern-influenced designs that served as a starting point for Galliano. Where some designer's might stick to just "The East" in the broadest sense of the term, Galliano looked at The East through Poiret who looked at The East through Europe at the turn of the century. We know, it's more postmodern than The Cheesecake Factory. Check out our video from of the show below, and, our gallery of the individual looks

Chanel

Inspired: Chanel's Dimensional Blooms

I just stumbled across images from the Chanel Spring/Summer Haute Couture show at Paris Fashion Week, which was utterly dreamlike, like a giant pop-up book of bursting, white, paper blooms.

I just stumbled across images from the Chanel Spring/Summer Haute Couture show at Paris Fashion Week, which was utterly dreamlike, like a giant pop-up book of bursting, white, paper blooms. An arrangement of 7,000 paper roses, daises, petals, and leaves wound their way around the Pavillon Cambon Capucines, which took a total of 4,800 hours to assemble. While I'd simply die and go to heaven to live in a space like this, it's too time-consuming a project for me. Seeing as Karl and I are on the outs right now, I don't think he'll make it happen for me, either. So, I decided to see if I could track down some smaller doses of dimensional blooms for my home. Paris Fashion Week: Video Recap

What better way to celebrate the end of Paris Fashion Week than with a video recap of the shows and a sound bite from Anna Wintour herself.

Hermes

Quote Of The Day: Suzy Menkes On Hermes Fall 2009

But instead of the bland face of the classic, Jean Paul Gaultier sent out a gutsy show, based on a photograph he saw of Amelia Earhart with a Hermès scarf tied around her aviator outfit.
But instead of the bland face of the classic, Jean Paul Gaultier sent out a gutsy show, based on a photograph he saw of Amelia Earhart with a Hermès scarf tied around her aviator outfit. That silken square appeared only once in the show of malleable leathers. It was tied around an umbrella rather than a classic Hermès bag — although that is another area where, by keeping quiet, the category is irreproachably chic.

Paris Fashion Week, A/W 2009: Chloe Hannah Macgibbon took Chloe back to its classic roots for Autumn 2009 picking up where Phoebe Philo left off. This was her second collection for the French design house which has been a bit rocky over the past few seasons with many changes at the top.

Paris Fashion Week Beauty: The Haute Hits and Misses

And so, Paris Fashion Week comes to a close.
Paris Fashion Week Beauty: The Haute Hits and Misses

And so, Paris Fashion Week comes to a close. Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen — OK, especially McQueen — all showed their visions for Fall 2009. Since Parisian shows tend to be more over-the-top and wildly creative than their New York counterparts, there's plenty to see here. If the trends translate to the sidewalk from the runway, expect to see matte red lips and updos galore this Fall. And maybe, just maybe, some terrifying clown lips.

Paris Fashion Week: Tao Comme des Garcons

Before our coverage of Paris Fashion Week folds back into the season at large, we want to mention the Tao Commes des Garcon collection which showed early on in the week.

Before our coverage of Paris Fashion Week folds back into the season at large, we want to mention the Tao Commes des Garcon collection which showed early on in the week. Designer Tao Kurihara studied at Central St. Martins and started her career working for Rei Kawakubo at the Tricot line, before launching Tao in 2005. This season, Kurihara was inspired by "cakes and sweets and decoration" which combined with a secondary inspiration of Eastern European folk costumery, and came out looking like an avant-garde version of our best bohemian beach wear. In the end, a great collection and surely one that will make a resort-timed editorial appearance or two.
