2010 Spring Paris Fashion Week: Chloé

You can spot a Chloé a mile away.

You can spot a Chloé a mile away. That's not to say Hannah MacGibbon has a formula, but rather, a distinct aesthetic, which has come to define the house. While Spring '10 was muted in color, it was bursting in silhouette. Hefty ponchos, cropped capes, leather boy shorts, sharp suits, and leather overalls were among the offerings. A major theme was crisp button-down shirts, buttoned all the way to the top. In that sense, this collection is buttoned-up. It's a collection for a warrior woman, one who isn't afraid to embark on an unknown journey, stylish poncho in hand.

So as not to abandon her more flirtatious customer, however, Hannah added a few flowy skirts and an airy white accordion-pleated frock — wedding dress anyone? And for the denim-loving gal, one look: a patched button-down denim shirt and comfy jeans. Onward ho!

Alexander McQueen Shows Holographic Alien Beauties for Spring 2010

>> Raquel Zimmermann, who has been missing from the runways all season, finally made an appearance at Alexander McQueen — projected on a screen behind the runway, topless, with a snake writhing around her; she later morphed into an arm-waving sea creature. Two cameras, each mounted on a robotic arm that glided back and forth on the runway, moved over the audience, replacing the video of Raquel on the screen and signaling the start of the show, titled "Plato's Atlantis."

Stiffly sculptural minidresses started out in mirrored snakeprints, moving into owl and insect territory, and finally the aquatic.  Hair, which began in cornrows with crimped tufts, ended in two gravity-defying horns, and the hologram catwalk operated on motion-control technology. Some of the white-faced models had prosthetics around their eyes, giving them alien-like bone structure, which took three hours to apply.  And if the Fall 2009 Nina Ricci shoes needed an editorial replacement, McQueen has it for Spring 2010 — hoof-like platform booties that Imogen Morris-Clarke says were ten inches high.

The collection, embellished and couture-like as it was, will be reinterpreted to be more wearable for retail, but if the livestream — which couldn't handle all the people who tried to tune in — is any indication (full video can now be seen here), people do love their McQueen spectacles.

Phoebe Philo's Coats Céline in Camel: Love It or Hate It?

Can you believe it's already been a year since it was announced Phoebe Philo would serve as creative director of Céline?

Can you believe it's already been a year since it was announced Phoebe Philo would serve as creative director of Céline? Time has flown and the British designer has designed her first major collection for the house. She dipped her feet with Cruise '10, but she's taken the plunge with Spring '10. The result is lots of camel — leather mini skirts, high-waist trousers, drawstring tops. There are a few black, white, and forest green pieces in there, but for the most part it's a camel world of sharp sportswear. What do you think?

Roland Mouret Takes You Front Row

It's official: live streaming runway shows are the hottest thing to do this season.

It's official: live streaming runway shows are the hottest thing to do this season. Hot off the heels of Burberry Prorsum, Alexander McQueendebuting today — and Twenty8Twelve's video foray is Roland Mouret. In conjunction with Fashionair.com, the designer will be streaming his Spring '10 runway show in Paris tomorrow, Oct. 7. "This is about taking the show and using it for what it should be — an amazing and immediate way for the consumer to see the collection," said Mouret.

In addition to viewing his show from a virtual front row seat, strategically placed cameras will allow us to experience the backstage action along with intimate interviews with Roland himself. While we eagerly await the action tomorrow, check out the site now to see what Roland had to say about his past Spring collection and why he dedicated it to his late father. Aw.

Chanel Goes Farm Girl, Takes a Roll in Hay for Spring 2010

>> Inspired by Marie Antoinette's Petit Hameau farm at Versailles and the fact that he spent part of his childhood on a farm — "You hear a lot about the environment these days. I thought it would be interesting to put a fashion twist on it" — Karl Lagerfeld sent his parade of Chanel models stomping through dirt starting at the sound of a rooster's crow.

Guests sat on burlap aged to look mildewed as the high heel-clogged (Lagerfeld called them 5 o'clock clogs), fake tattooed, wicker basket-carrying girls stepped one by one from a giant haystack.  The barnyard set took a month and a half of construction beforehand and then a week to assemble at the Grand Palais, where the show was held. Apparently pigs were supposed to be involved, too, but Heidi Mount Twittered that they were too scared to be in the show.  Chanel face Lily Allen and mock band popped up through a trap door in the floor — Iekeliene Stange and Charlotte di Calypso provided backup singing — and Freja Beha Erichsen and Baptiste Giabiconi walked the runway four times together.

The last time, they were joined by Lara Stone as bride, and all "fell upon each other in the hay as Karl walked past to bow" — in jeans, no less — while Freja and Lara shared a kiss.

First Look: Alexander McQueen Spring 2010

Technical issues surrounding the live broadcast caused a late start to the Alexander McQueen show today in Paris.

Technical issues surrounding the live broadcast caused a late start to the Alexander McQueen show today in Paris. For those who missed out on the SHOWStudio video feed, or had issues with streaming, the complete show will be played again today at 5pm EST.

In a video interview before the show began, McQueen said that contrary to what many designers have been presenting for spring 2010 he didn't feel it made sense to play it safe. The designer preferred to base his collection on the "fantasy and legend" of Plato's Atlantis.

Chanel's Barn Bonanza!

Karl does country. It's impossible to guess Karl's next move. And who would have thought it would be to the barn? His Spring collection, replete with stars and spectacles, lightened the mood. The clothes were frilly, feminine, and colorful, adorned with thematic accessories like Chanel clogs, flowers in the hair, and drippy jewels. Prince was there — random — and so were Chanel devotees Rihanna, Claudia Schiffer, Dasha Zhukova, and Clemence Poesy. With Karl playing a part, and Lily Allen serenading, it looked like a thrilling fashion hoedown.
