Fall 2011 New York Fashion Week: Isaac Mizrahi

You know it's going to be a good time at the show when a) you're greeted by a cute waiter offering slices of chocolate cake, and b) among the show notes, it credits "Dog Grooming: The Salty Paw." This is the world of Isaac, man of endless charisma and good humor, who can present zippy, fresh womenswear with a wink and a little dose of kitsch. First, a word on colors: candy pink, lavender, citrus orange, and sky blue dominated, along with two oversized floral prints. Now the dogs: mini poodles literally wore a technicolor coat, dyed to match their model masters. If you could tear your eyes away from the entertaining spectacle, you could enjoy the clothes, which were fresh and a bit retro, referencing a halcyon world of ladies who lunch with their dogs by their feet and have glamorous events by night. The highlights —  a citrus dress with a slim black v-neck and a seafoam green maxi skirt under a long black turtleneck sweater — showed Isaac's knack for mixing fancy and casual. Ice skater Johnny Weir, watching from the front row while draped in a seafoam green fur jacket and jeans, looked like he had gotten just that kind of styling lesson from Isaac.

  • Trends: Floral prints, maxi skirts, candy color, retro femininity.
  • Colors: Pink, lavender, sky blue, citrus, black, gray.
  • Key Looks: A black turtleneck sweater layered over a seafoam green skirt.
  • Accessories: Dyed-to-match poodles — not seriously, of course.
  • Who Would Wear It: While we love Johnny Weir, we think young celebs like Emma Roberts should embrace Isaac's gowns for the red carpet.

This Fall marked Michael Kors's 30th year in the fashion industry, and he celebrated by turning out a collection filled with all the sleek, wearable glamour that's made him famous.

This Fall marked Michael Kors's 30th year in the fashion industry, and he celebrated by turning out a collection filled with all the sleek, wearable glamour that's made him famous. Filled with slinky dresses, perfectly tailored pantsuits, and gorgeous coats you'll wear for life, the collection was spot-on for the modern woman who loves her slinky silk jersey and the occasional fox fur. The ensembles were mostly monochromatic, constructed in shades of gray, plum, mauve, and tan, and we love the subtle sartorial nods to the '70s, '80s, and '90s. To see all the luxe looks, watch our runway coverage now!

Quick Hits With . . . Street Peeper's Phil Oh

>> Street Peeper's Phil Oh took a quick time-out to chat with us about the perfect snap, Fashion Week essentials, and more. Listen up to what he has to say:

What kind of street style inspires you?

I'm always a sucker for prints and colors but it's hard to do in the Winter because it's freezing.

Tell us about one of the wildest looks you've seen at NYFW.

Susie Bubble, my BFF, was wearing this electric blue turban and a pair of vintage Ralph Lauren sequin floral pants. It has white sequins with red, blue, and orange flowers on it. It was pretty ridiculous; we walked into an Indian restaurant for dinner and then everyone turned their heads and stared at her. I thought it was amazing — one of my favorite Susie Bubble looks.

What are your Fashion Week essentials?

Uniqlo HeatTech long johns and t-shirts. They cost about $15 and keep me warm all through Winter.

What are your Fashion Week indulgences?

Marea on Central Park South has a $40 prix fixe lunch. It's my Fashion Week splurge: I go there and get a delicious uni and crab spaghetti between shows, then come back to take more photos.

How do you stay sane during this time?

I don't go out anymore because I have to wake up early and I'm the kind of person that requires eight hours of sleep. I know it's not fun and I'm a party pooper. Other than that, I try to stay hydrated with coconut water and use Kiehl's lip balm.

    Any post-Fashion Week plans?

After March 10, I plan on sleeping for a week and playing video games. I'm going to get a Wii and play Super Mario Galaxy.

2011 Fall New York Fashion Week: Ralph Lauren

Inspired by the smoky mystery of the Far East, Ralph Lauren gave us a little Shanghai surprise this morning.
Fall 2011 New York Fashion Week: Ralph Lauren 2011-02-17 14:27:57

Inspired by the smoky mystery of the Far East, Ralph Lauren gave us a little Shanghai surprise this morning. With a soft version of David Bowie's "China Girl" playing in the background, models emerged in mostly black, often lustrous ensembles accessorized with jade earrings and red lacquered heels. The silhouettes remained classic — halter dresses, tuxedos, shawl coats — but he achieved a dramatic, sexy mood via rich satiny fabrics and sparkling details. There was ornate beading on dresses, including a black dress that shone from being covered entirely in black beads, wrap dresses done in a luxurious garnet-hued panné velvet, and a double-breasted suit in shantung silk that inspired visions of Marlene Dietrich in Shanghai Express. Ralph had his menswear moment as well, showing pinstripe trousers with a jade green silk top and sharply tailored tuxedos. It may not be a vision of the China that exists today, but it was one fun, romantic trip east on the Ralph train. For the full runway video, visit FabSugarTV.

  • Trends: Asian influence, evening wear, jumpsuits, tuxedos.
  • Colors: Black, red, emerald green, purple.
  • Key Looks: An emerald green satin gown was made for the red carpet.
  • Accessories: Jade jewelry, platform red lacquered heels.
  • Who Would Wear It: Women looking for exotic allure; red-carpet celebs.

Vera Wang Shows Textured and Architectural Hair

At Vera Wang's show, lead stylist Orlando Pita created a structured yet loose low ponytail that was sleek but not overly smooth.

At Vera Wang's show, lead stylist Orlando Pita created a structured yet loose low ponytail that was sleek but not overly smooth. To create the look, he sprayed Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray before blow-drying it straight. Once the hair was dry, he used the product for hold in the front, then teased the back and put it in the ponytail. Finally, he tucked it under and held it with pins.

Yigal Azrouël's Fall 2011 collection conjured up images of super chic French girls walking the streets of St. Germaine and Rue Etienne Marcelle. The collection was filled with boyish basics like cropped slim trousers, button-up shirts, and double-breasted blazers, yet still showed its feminine side with luxe fur touches, stunning silk and feathered cocktail frocks, and an unexpected palette of turquoise, peach, and the occasional shot of hot yellow or pink. The beauty look was particularly intriguing as models wore feathered headbands with pulled-back hair, but to see all the outfits and styling choices, watch our coverage now!
