Doo.Ri Fall 2011 Collection Fashion Week Review

Doo-Ri Chung is known for her signature draping skills but for her Fall 2011 collection seen earlier this evening at Eyebeam Gallery in Chelsea, the designer mixed things up. In addition to showing languid jersey gowns, some slit high to the thigh, the designer introduced a new category to her repertoire: slick tailored pieces comprised of felted wool coats, nylon jackets, and trousers. Dresses, embellished with cool cord macrame also played an integral role in the storyboard inspired by artist Beverly Semmes. This concept, described by Doo-Ri as "linear structure," adds a sharp touch without looking too severe — perfect for that city girl wanting to add a little edge to her look.

  • Trends: Long silhouettes, mohair trim, high-slit gowns and long skirts, dolman sleeves, sheer and leather inserts, cord macrame detailing.
  • Colors: Gray, sapphire blue, navy, beige.
  • Key Looks: A heather gray racerback gown with sheer inserts.
  • Accessories: Chunky leather woven booties, simple leather bracelets, oversized wool scarves, thigh-high lace-up boots.
  • Who Would Wear It: Urban nomads, art types.

A Smile-Brightening Tip From Rebecca Taylor's Backstage

Sporting '70s-girl-in-Paris makeup, Rebecca Taylor's models were sultry in rosy blush and a soft wash of slate eye shadow — a look that lead makeup artist Sil Bruinsma called "a little sexy, almost louche."

Sporting '70s-girl-in-Paris makeup, Rebecca Taylor's models were sultry in rosy blush and a soft wash of slate eye shadow — a look that lead makeup artist Sil Bruinsma called "a little sexy, almost louche." The shiny burgundy lip was created by using MAC Pro Lipmix in Burgundy as a stain, then following with a coat of Lipglass in Looks Like Sin. If you're interested in a lip color like this one, Bruinsma shared a tip: burgundy shades with blue undertones will make teeth look brighter. Hardly louche, we'd say.

Honor Goes For a Red-Hot Look

The makeup look at Honor, Giovanna Randall's fledgling clothing line, was a beautifully bright mashup of three separate decades.

The makeup look at Honor, Giovanna Randall's fledgling clothing line, was a beautifully bright mashup of three separate decades. "The collection has a '70s sensibility, but in an American sportswear way," lead makeup artist James Boehmer said of Randall's sophomore collection. "We didn't want the makeup or hair to look '70s, because then the clothes would, too." Instead, he dipped into the '90s for an "anarchistic" look, adding touches of club-kid style of the early '80s.

The touchstone of the look, an orangey-red eye look, was inspired by desert colors — no eye shadow necessary. Boehmer used Red Square Velvet Matte Lip Pencil as a base, then blended two Nars blushes (Exhibit A and Taj Mahal) to create a look that contrasted with the rich teals, pinks, and yellows of the collection. The key to pulling off such bright shades? "Wear it with confidence and strength," says Boehmer.
