Lady Gaga made history with her gender-bending opening performance at the VMAs — dressed in greaser gear as her "You and I" video alter ego Jo Calderone, Gaga recited a monologue before launching into the song. She wore a loose-fitting white t-shirt, black pants, and black shoes — as well as a black jacket that she ceremoniously removed once things got going. Gaga's hair and makeup were subdued, to say the least; she wore a jet black, slicked-back wig, bold brows, and some artfully applied scruff. What do you think of Lady Gaga/Jo Calderone's onstage look?

Here's Miley Cyrus wearing a multitextured, multipatterned Roberto Cavalli gown, featuring mixed hues of muted taupe, gold, black, and seafoam green. Drop earrings, a wraparound necklace, and an oversize ring provide some added flair, while a low back line and bold eye makeup lend plenty more drama. Miley is known for taking red-carpet risks, but do you think she took it too far this time?

VMAs: Nicki Minaj

Tonight, Nicki Minaj delivered a lot of look — in fact, we hardly know where to begin.

Tonight, Nicki Minaj delivered a lot of look — in fact, we hardly know where to begin. The singer stepped out in a sculptural pink-metallic, ballet-inspired ensemble with printed socks, tights, and a few, well, stuffed animal accoutrements. Playful plastic jewels, cotton-candy inspired updo, major lashes, and a printed mask complete her wild awards look. So, is this on par for Miss Minaj or did she go too far with her whimsical style?

VMAs: Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes is great at low-key glamour, and tonight her look at the VMAs is no exception.

Katie Holmes is great at low-key glamour, and tonight her look at the VMAs is no exception. Her dress is a simple peach midlength piece with black lace overlay and a thick band at the waist to create pretty proportions. Her camel lace-up booties don't match the dress but also don't clash. Beauty wise, she's wearing long, soft waves and natural-looking makeup. She's almost always subtle, but given some of the other looks we've seen come down the black carpet at this show, do you think it's a little informal?

Britney Spears is the subject of tonight's big tribute performance, and she's in fine form, wearing a belted sequined minidress with a cool chevron pattern and open-toed patent black midcalf boots. Her makeup and hair are classic Britney — perfect long blond locks and defined eyes, but nothing over the top. Are you as excited about this look as you are about tonight's performances?

Hold on to your hats, ladies: the Biebs has arrived, and he's not alone.

Hold on to your hats, ladies: the Biebs has arrived, and he's not alone. Justin Bieber is walking the black carpet with a baby snake, and it actually looks quite fetching with his ensemble tonight. He's wearing a black tee, fitted blazer, and bright red skinny pants — and is getting an extra dose of animal print via a pair of cheetah-print loafers. He's also sporting gold chains, geek glasses, and his signature grown-up shaggy hairstyle. How do you feel about Justin's look?

VMAs: Katy Perry

We've been anxiously awaiting Katy Perry's arrival — and the pop star didn't disappoint.

We've been anxiously awaiting Katy Perry's arrival — and the pop star didn't disappoint. Channeling a playfully Asian-inspired style, Katy opted for a beaded, cutout kimono minidress and a sweet parasol, then finished with candy-pink heels that incidentally matched her hot-pink locks. It's a bold look for Miss Perry, but we wouldn't expect anything less — do you love it?
