The Latest Covetable Looks From Pre-Fall 2012 — Alexander McQueen, Lanvin, Louis Vuitton, and More

Retro throwbacks, tailored perfection, and soft feminine references — pre-Fall '12 is a beautiful blend of structured shapes and unexpected girlie details.

Retro throwbacks, tailored perfection, and soft feminine references — pre-Fall '12 is a beautiful blend of structured shapes and unexpected girlie details. Lanvin delivered deliberately unfinished embellishments like exposed dart seams and raw edges, while Givenchy revived its "greatest hits" prints (think tropics and rottweiler motifs), and Sarah Burton traveled back in time to the '60s English countryside to whip up a cool equestrian-inspired McQ collection. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. We're obsessed with Carven's nod to mod silhouettes, Derek Lam's focus on detachable mink collars, and Versace's Studio 54 vibe, too. It's a pre-season worth poring over, so get to it. Click through to see even more inspired looks and gorgeous accessories from Pre-Fall 2012.

BCBG Pre-Fall 2012 Collection

For BCBG Max Azria's 2012 Pre-Fall collection, designers Max and Lubov Azria continued to show off their penchant for asymmetrical hemlines and fluid gowns. Described as, "Slavic soul meets bohemian spirit," the designers created silk chiffon dresses with sheer, pleated, and lace details, encompassing a simultaneously modern, yet feminine spirit. Like last season, handkerchief hemlines and bright neon pops were present and paired with leather fringe belts adding a tough touch to the diaphanous textiles. The maxidresses are not for the shy; pay special attention to the skin-baring sheer lace insets. More highlights from the collection below.

  • Trends: Asymmetric hemlines, bright colors, lace insets.
  • Colors: Blue, yellow, orange, purple, and black.
  • Key Look: The maxidresses with the sheer lace insets are gorgeous.
  • Accessories: Leather fringe belts and platform sandals.
  • Who Would Wear It: Girls who like to inject a bohemian chic touch to their look like Kate Hudson, Kate Bosworth, and Freida Pinto.
Vera Wang

Vera Wang Pre-Fall 2012

Vera Wang Pre Fall 2012

Citing Jane Birkin and 1960s Yves Saint Laurent as muses, Vera Wang offers up a Pre-Fall collection that's teeming with both the whimsical and the vintage — all while being totally grounded in a modern woman's aesthetic. Rife with textures and layers and dotted with full-bodied prints, Wang marries older references, like 16-button gloves, with newer purposes, like wearing those gloves as sleeves. Rich fabrications feel all the more wearable layered up from head to toe — for every wisp of a dress, she counters with ribbed knee socks, vests, and overcoats, giving us the downtown girl with a flair for Parisian polish.

  • Trends: Layering, gloves as sleeves, sportswear, abstract prints.
  • Colors: Gray, black, rich multihued prints, orange, purple.
  • Key Look: The soft, purple print high-low dress and cropped gray jacket.
  • Accessories: Gloves, knee socks, loafer pumps.
  • Who Would Wear It: The modern femme.

Chanel Pre-Fall 2012 Collection

With luxe fabrics, metallic saris, jeweled headpieces, and Chanel's signature tweed, Karl Lagerfeld transported his Pre-Fall Paris spectators to colonial India. Rest assured, this collection is free of over-the-top Bollywood clichés, instead offering up imperial references in its homage to Bombay. While it highlights Chanel's expertise — suiting, ladylike dressing, rich texture, and layers of pretty pearls — it all marries perfectly with a beautiful departure to a more exotic aesthetic. Revealing that "most of the inspiration is from Indian men’s clothes rather than women’s clothes," Lagerfeld's parade of dresses and skirts over pants, gold-embroidered tunics, beaded sandals, and flat booties speaks both to bohemian decadence and wearability.

  • Trends: Dresses over pants, metallics, bohemian.
  • Colors: Black, white, gold, silver, and gunmetal metallics; a splash of fuchsia, blue, and pink.
  • Key Look: The cropped white button-down with the white draped skirt over pants, the silver and gold saris.
  • Accessories: Layered beaded necklace, headpieces, nose rings, bangles, green and brown quilted crossbody bags, embellished sandals, metallic booties, black-and-white booties, ties.
  • Who Would Wear It: The refined bohemian and Chanel fans, Freida Pinto, Kate Bosworth, Alexa Chung.
