'90s grunge might be one thing we weren't expecting from Phillip Lim's Spring 2013 collection, which is why it was that much cooler. Everything you Generation X and Y'ers loved — all things plaid, slouchy pants and crop tops, denim — was "recut" by Lim to feel modern, a little bit rebellious, but taken in pieces, totally chic. Winning the totally chic test were his fitted moto jackets done in corded silk and pretty floral prints. Check out all the pictures from the 3.1 Phillip Lim Spring 2013 collection, and come back soon for our full review.

3.1 Phillip Lim Spring 2013

My my, hey hey; rock 'n' roll is here to stay — or at least it is for the posse of bed-headed grunge girls that Phillip Lim sent down his Spring 2013 runway.
3.1 Phillip Lim Spring 2013 | Runway

My my, hey hey; rock 'n' roll is here to stay — or at least it is for the posse of bed-headed grunge girls that Phillip Lim sent down his Spring 2013 runway. To a melancholy rendition of Neil Young's "Into the Black" by Chromatics, they drifted by — hands in pockets, eyes smudged with kohl — like old-school Courtney Loves headed into the daylight after a really good night. But where the Courtney Love of 1994 reveled in her ripped-up tights and tattered toddler dresses, these girls were undone in a modern way that could only be pure Lim.

The designer's starting point, the show notes said, was the literary "cut-up" technique employed by '50s poets and '90s musicians — the act of creating something and then literally cutting it up and putting it back together into something new. Thus, there was an artful, pieced quality to the slouchy layers and mixed-up prints on offer: an overall dress, for example, was sliced and inset with chiffon, while one gorgeous raspberry biker jacket had a second zippered underlayer that made for a cool trompe l'oeil effect.

3.1 Phillip Lim Resort 2013

For Resort 2013, Phillip Lim looked not to exotic beach locales or sun-drenched vacation destinations.
3.1 Phillip Lim Resort 2013 Pictures

For Resort 2013, Phillip Lim looked not to exotic beach locales or sun-drenched vacation destinations. Instead, the designer — and recent CFDA Swarovski Award for Menswear winner — found inspiration much closer to home. "I was sitting in my garden, watching the blooms come out," Lim said. The resulting collection is a breezy mix of Lim's signature functionality and cool modernity — covered in a smattering of lush floral prints. "Flutility," Lim explained. "It's about adding blooms to utilitarian forms." But it's not all roses and hydrangeas: the designer also looked to city maps and aerial urban views for design cues, and thus there are graphic grid prints, laminated skins, and lots of slick black leather to temper all the sweetness.
