When all is said and done, 2011 was a great year for trends — we saw scores of stylish looks hitting the runways, from ladylike, feminine hemlines to bold brights, funky allover prints, and hypersexual boudoir and fetish ensembles. In order to give 2011's trends a proper highlight, we're looking back on five of our absolute favorites. Here's to 2012 — and many more fabulous trends!
Busy Philipps looked absolutely lovely at the People's Choice Awards nominations in a green silk shirtdress and rich mahogany knee-high boots for a look that channeled the season's '70s trend in the best way. Somewhere, Mary Tyler Moore is having a little outfit envy. The key piece? The right shirt dress. In this case, you want it to be a flowy material like silk or crepe de chine, with long sleeves and a fuller skirt. Pair it with boots in cool weather and loafer pumps or an ankle-strap heels in the warmer months. Case in point: check out the runway looks at Gucci and Chloé. We did some hunting and found our top options for both shirt dresses and a gorgeous pair of knee-high boots to go with them.
Good news for you '70s fans: the flowy dresses, flare-leg pants, and big hats that dominated Spring runways are still relevant in Pre-Fall. That groovy era of boho hippies and Carly Simon songs (time to cue You're So Vain) lives on. I recently heard about a new bar in SF that's right up my '70s-loving alley: Kozy Kar Bar. Apparently, there are waterbeds, hard drinks, shag carpet, and Playboy pinups all around. Sounds like a cheesy good time, no? I rounded up some friends to check it out, and asked you to dress me up according to the groovy theme. I remember when I saw Dazed and Confused in the theater circa 1993 (15 years ago!) — I wanted to see it again, and again, and again. And, I have. It's probably one of my most worn out DVDs. I love the '70s and this Richard Linklater-directed film is a fun trip. The guys are hot, the girls are gorgeous, the music is groovy, and the cars are cool. All the story lines are exciting and the senior bitches are unforgettable. (One of my favorite Parker Posey roles, ever.) If all you want is a slow ride and to take it easy, soak up this not-too-cool-for-school wardrobe.

After the wave of Coachella fervor this weekend, I was feeling inspired to go '70s vintage. With a bit of digging, I found myself a perfect prize: this vintage pleated minidress.
The loose floaty top is feminine, and the waist nips in just the right place. How Fab would it be with a Coachella-inspired neon bangle or two?

If I had to guess, I'd say Mischa Barton's favorite decade is the '70s. The actress, who was shopping for magazines, went back to her roots in a strapless floral dress, denim vest, and yellow sandals. I guess her recent fashion faux pas was a momentary lapse in fashion judgment. I'm glad the old Mischa is back . . . let's hope she stays this way!
