The Emperor Valentino Reigns at New York Premiere

>> Last night, Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti were in New York to fete the opening of Valentino: The Last Emperor — arguably their biggest Manhattan party ever, between the screening and the dinner for 200 of fashion's finest (including Anna Wintour, Anja Rubik, Jason Wu, and Chanel Iman) at the Plaza's Oak Room.  The designer's six pugs Molly, Milton, Monty, Margot, Maude, and Maggie, who director Matt Tyrnauer has dubbed "the costars of the film," weren't present — according to Valentino, "they're getting some time away from me in Italy" — but maybe that's a good thing: Karolina Kurkova admitted, “they’re really not nice to everybody” and Gwyneth Paltrow agreed, calling the pugs "kind of mean."

When Giancarlo Giammetti was asked about his comment on film that the designer looked too tan, he was quick to explain, "We'd come from the beach, and we were about to show summer suits, and he just . . . it just seemed like too much. But it was one time, and one time only."  And as for those rumors that he was back to helping out at Valentino for Fall 2009, Garavani denied having any hand in it, "No, not at all.  Very far from the truth. I don’t think about it. I wish my assistants to do the best. It’s a big job, though, and to know my name goes on the designs, I want them to do the best.”

Meanwhile, the film seems to have already inspired at least one person — Zac Posen. "I wouldn't mind being followed around too for two years.  It's all about having the right collaborators."

>> THE MODELIZERAgyness Deyn recently prompted rumors of retirement when she said of Fashion Week: "I do like doing it. But you know when you kind of have it figured out in your head that you don’t want to do this forever?"  And it didn't help that days of runway shows passed, and no sign of Agy . . . until this evening.  She did both opening and closing honors at Anna Sui Fall 2009, "skipping down the runway" at the end of the show. Twelve British Models, Twelve i-D Covers for March 2009

>> Last week, Edward Enninful was in Goa, India, styling a shoot for Vogue, but this week, it's all about i-D and England — he brought together twelve British faces — past and present — for i-D's March 2009 Best of British issue.  "The confirmations were instant — it was about doing something for England, and models have been so faceless — British models always have personality."

Together with Solve Sundsbo, Enninful styled each of the twelve covers to bring out the character of the individual model — "I went though a great thought process — we didn't want clichés and stereotypes" — "rock 'n' roll Kate" Moss as a mature woman and fashion designer, "ageless" British models like Twiggy, newcomer Eliza Cummins, who is also moonlighting on the new Dazed & Confused (NSFW), symbolizing British grit with a snarl.  To further the emphasis on personality, each cover face has her own cover quote summing up her outlook, from Stella Tennant — "I don't really fit the box" — to Agyness Deyn — "Feel the fear and do it anyway."  Leave it to Naomi Campbell to bring the non sequitur: "I love a Sunday roast."

Agyness Deyn

>> THE MODELIZER —Although she has let reports to the contrary stand for quite some time, Agyness Deyn says she lives alone in her East Village apartment, not with boyfriend Albert Hammond Jr., and that she and Albert aren't engaged.  Something seems fishy, since Vogue just featured the couple in their February 2009 issue — the intro paragraph to the spread identifies Hammond, Jr. as her fiance, and quotes Albert saying, "We had been dating a month or two when she asked me to move in with her.  I would've done anything she wanted the night we met."  Maybe they've decided to take some space?  Regardless, Agyness will be doing Fashion Week — that is, unless for the third season in a row, an illness does her in.  [NY Mag]

Love Magazine: The Previews

>> We've heard a good deal about the innards, but now we've got some visuals to go along with it.  Love magazine's first issue is all about the "Fashion and Fame," according to three newly-released previews — which feature Iggy Pop, a violet-haired Iris Strubegger, and Agyness Deyn as Queen Elizabeth II.  It's only two weeks now, and Katie Grand is already planning a big launch on Feb.

>> INSIDER WIRE —The first preview of Katie Grand's new magazine Love, which makes its debut in just two short weeks — Feb. 19 — has hit the interwebs.  We already have some idea of what to expect from the magazine — Beth Ditto on the cover, Darya Kurovska appearing in two editorials, Lara Stone photographed by Angelo Pennetta — and now a look at Agyness Deyn as the Queen, part of an "Icons" series Josh Olins shot for the magazine.  Not that it was expected to be otherwise, but this is not your typical fashion magazine — Katie told Interview of the first issue: "It's very curvy.  No one is a sample size in the whole issue, and it's not so retouched.  I just wanted to take pictures of iconic people without redrawing them." Behind the Seams: Louis Vuitton Pays Tribute to Stephen Sprouse

Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs threw a big bash as a tribute to artist Stephen Sprouse. You may recall that Marc designed an entire graffiti-inspired collection in honor of the man. Unfortunately, the deceased Sprouse couldn't be there to greet his guests, but his presence was certainly felt. Models Agyness Deyn, Chanel Iman, Arlenis Sosa, and Erin Wasson, as well as actresses Brooke Shields and Molly Sims, all convened at the LV store in SoHo, then moved the festivities to the Bowery Ballroom. Debbie Harry sang, neon lights glowed, and the fun went on and on . . .
