McQ

A First Look at the Revamped, Less Expensive McQ Line

>> Alexander McQueen doesn't plan to show off its full intentions for McQ until February for the Fall 2011 season — when there will be jewelry, bags, and shoes along with the clothes — but it's giving a sneak peek with the Pre-Fall 2011 collection it unveiled today.

>> Alexander McQueen doesn't plan to show off its full intentions for McQ until February for the Fall 2011 season — when there will be jewelry, bags, and shoes along with the clothes — but it's giving a sneak peek with the Pre-Fall 2011 collection it unveiled today. Now that McQueen has complete control of the brand (which was previously licensed) and a new, devoted creative director — Pina Ferlisi — expect some change.

McQ currently represents about 20 percent of McQueen's business, but Jonathan Akeroyd, the brand's president and CEO, expects it to grow to 35 percent by 2012: “We always felt there was scope to create a brand that was more accessible — and a little more edgy. We’ve got a strong ambition for it.” There will be a push for more accessories and a more casual feel, with prices lowered by 25 percent: think jeans priced at 175 euros ($235), dresses at 200 euros ($270), jackets starting at 300 euros ($405) and printed T-shirts at 70 euros ($95).

E-commerce is expected to launch next year on the McQ website, and in the meantime, a film will debut this week instead of a lookbook, featuring four girls wearing the new Pre-Fall 2011 collection in real-life situations. And "democratic" London and New York Fashion Week events are planned for next Spring, with consumers as well as fashion insiders expected to be involved.

Designer John Bradfield Discusses His Alexander McQueen-Inspired Table

While I was wowed by many of the beautiful tables at last week's Dining by Design, the table that surprised and impressed me the most was created by San Francisco designers John Bradfield and Maryam Monsef.
San Francisco Designer John Bradfield Channels Alexander McQueen For Dining by Design Tablescape

While I was wowed by many of the beautiful tables at last week's Dining by Design, the table that surprised and impressed me the most was created by San Francisco designers John Bradfield and Maryam Monsef. Combining beautiful elements from nature with a sophisticated and elegant palette, the table's — and designers' — popularity was reflected in the number of people drawn to it. Bradfield cited his inspiration for the tablesetting as the 2006 Fall/Winter runway show by Alexander McQueen, and was particularly influenced by a single dress. Find out what dress inspired Bradfield, as well as more about the table, in my interview with the designer.

In the ultimate tribute, the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced plans to honor McQueen's legacy with an exhibit dedicated to the design talent and fashion world provocateur. Set for next Spring, the museum will stage “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty,” a celebration of the designer's work, open May 4 through July 3.

With plans to feature nearly 100 pieces, Andrew Bolton, who is spearheading the exhibit, is gathering designs that span the designer's full breadth of work, beginning with his graduate collection at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London and culminating with his final collection. Ultimately, it's about honoring the design genius and his "singular voice"; says Bolt, "We want to get across two elements — the spectacle of the runway presentations and the beauty of his craftsmanship.” We couldn't think of a more fitting way to pay homage.

The 2011 Costume Institute Gala and Exhibit to Focus on Alexander McQueen

>> Next year's Costume Institute Gala — on May 2, 2011 — has its theme: "Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty."

>> Next year's Costume Institute Gala — on May 2, 2011 — has its theme: "Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty." Anna Wintour, Stella McCartney, and Colin Firth are set to co-chair the event, with Francois-Henri Pinault and Salma Hayek as honorary chairs.

The accompanying exhibit will run at the museum May 4-July 31, 2011, and will cover McQueen's work from his Central Saint Martins postgraduate collection in 1992 to his final runway presentation, which took place weeks after his death in February 2010. A hundred pieces from his 19-year career will be on view, drawn from the McQueen London archives, the Givenchy archive in Paris, and private collections, including Isabella Blow's wardrobe, which Daphne Guinness owns in its entirety.

Curator Andrew Bolton, who is spearheading the project, stressed that he doesn't want the exhibit to feel like a retrospective, so the focus is thematic rather than chronological, reflecting McQueen's fascination with the 19th-century Romantic movement. Among the themed galleries planned: “The Savage Mind,” “Romantic Gothic,” “Romantic Nationalism,” “Romantic Exoticism,” and “Romantic Primitivism.” There will also be a “Cabinet of Curiosities” gallery featuring McQueen's collaborations with Philip Treacy and Shaun Leane, and a separate screening room to display videos of McQueen's theatrical runway presentations.

Sam Gainsbury and Joseph Bennett, who helped produce those dramatic shows, are serving as creative consultants to the exhibit, and the Alexander McQueen company is underwriting the whole thing with support from American Express and Conde Nast. “We felt it would be a great opportunity to show Lee’s work and his incredible contribution to the world of fashion and art,” Jonathan Akeroyd, president and CEO of Alexander McQueen, told WWD. “It felt like the right thing to do. Lee loved the museum. It will give us a great opportunity to show Lee’s work and the Alexander McQueen brand to a much broader community. It’s the greatest tribute and important for his legacy, but it’s also an exciting new chapter in the history of the brand.”

Nice and New: Alexander McQueen For The Rug Company

Before he passed away in February, Alexander McQueen created a luxurious six-piece collection of rugs and pillows for The Rug Company, and now, three years in the making, the line is finally available.

Before he passed away in February, Alexander McQueen created a luxurious six-piece collection of rugs and pillows for The Rug Company, and now, three years in the making, the line is finally available. McQueen's trademark skull pattern made its way onto one baby blue and white rug, as well as two pillows, in black and gold, while his recognizable hummingbird, feather, and military broçade themes make up the rest of the line. Finely knotted, the hummingbird rug is an almost photographic reproduction of McQueen's sartorial design, though these pieces will cost you more. A six-by-nine rug goes for about $19,000, while a scarf will cost you only $260. As for accessorizing and creating your ensemble, I think the same rules apply: layer one of McQueen's rugs or pillows over simple separates or go bold and mix them with prints.
